Enjoying Spring for Seniors

For seniors, the sensitivities to cold temperatures usually make the winter a dreary, unpleasant season, spent mostly indoors. But now that the vernal equinox has passed and the days are growing brighter and warmer, the time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather is upon us. There are several great spring activities that can help seniors reconnect with themselves, nature, and their families.

  1. Visit a farmer’s market: The smells and tastes of spring are nowhere more evident than in the offerings at the stalls of a farmer’s market. Fresh, local, in-season fruits, vegetables, honey, preserves, juices, and more, all produced with care and artistry, await to delight and tantalize your senses.
  2. Make a charcuterie board: A growing trend, a charcuterie board is the perfect way to enjoy your selections from a farmer’s market. You can stick to the traditional formula of meats and cheeses, or add fruits, nuts, or even desserts for a unique flair. It’s perfect for enjoying outdoors with friends and family, either at a picnic table in the park, or spread out on a blanket in the middle of a nature walk.
  3. Painting: The vibrant colors of spring, coupled with the more agreeable weather, is the perfect recipe for landscape artistry outside. Channel your inner Bob Ross and compose a beautiful sunrise over a field of wildflowers, or any other scene that strikes your fancy.
  4. Bird watching: With warmer weather, our fine feathered friends are returning from their winter sojourn and singing for all to hear. Grab a pair of binoculars and hit the trails. You can enjoy spotting birds on their own merits, or you can grab a field guide to birds of your area if you’re more serious about it.
