According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as Emphysema is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. Like many other diseases, progressive means that they get worse over time.

Symptoms of COPD may at first be nonexistent or mild. As the disease continues to get worse, the symptoms become more severe. Some symptoms of COPD include:

  • An ongoing cough or a cough that produces a lot of mucus (often called smoker's cough)

  • Chest tightness

  • Shortness of breath, especially when triggered by physical activity

  • Wheezing or a whistling or squeaky sound when  you breathe

More severe symptoms may require hospital treatment. You should seek emergency care if you are experiencing the following:

  • You are having a hard time catching your breath or talking

  • Your lips or fingernails are turning blue or gray (this is a sign of low oxygen levels in your blood)

  • People notice that you are not mentally alert

  • You have a fast heartbeat

  • Your current treatment for symptoms are not improving

Just because you have COPD does not mean that you don't have to live a happy, normal life. The question is, if you are the primary caregiver for a loved one with COPD, you might be asking yourself, "When is it time to get extra help?" Every caregiver reaches a point of physical and emotional exhaustion when caring for a loved one full time. It is important to find a healthy balance for yourself so you can get rest. With the help of Senior Helpers, not only do you get a break, but our caregivers can provide your loved one can get one-on-one assistance with:
