Can Families Receive Respite Care Through the CMS GUIDE Program?

What Is Respite Care?

Respite care gives a family caregiver time to step away while their loved one receives support from a trained caregiver.

That time may be used to:

• Attend an appointment
• Go to work
• Run errands
• Spend time with other family members
• Rest and recharge
• Simply take a break without worrying that their loved one is alone

Respite care is not about stepping away from someone you love. It is about creating a care plan that supports the whole family.

How Does the GUIDE Program Help Family Caregivers?

GUIDE stands for Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience.

The program was created to support people living with dementia and the family members or friends helping care for them.

For eligible families, GUIDE may include:

• Personalized dementia care planning
• Care coordination
• Caregiver education and guidance
• Connections to community resources
• Respite care support
• Help navigating changes in care needs

The goal is to help people living with dementia remain supported at home while also giving family caregivers the help they need along the way.

Who May Qualify for Respite Care Through GUIDE?

To participate in the GUIDE Program, the person living with dementia generally must meet the following requirements:

1. Be enrolled in Traditional Medicare
2. Have a suspected or confirmed dementia diagnosis, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, or another form of dementia
3. Live at home or in an eligible residential community

A person may not qualify if they:

• Are enrolled in Medicare Advantage
• Participate in a Special Needs Plan
• Live in a long-term care facility
• Are currently receiving hospice services
• Participate in a PACE Program

Eligibility is confirmed through the GUIDE Program, so families should not assume they do or do not qualify without asking.

What Can Respite Care Look Like at Home?

Every family needs something different.

For one caregiver, respite may mean having someone stay with Mom for a few hours while they attend an appointment.

For another, it may mean regular support each week so they can work, shop for groceries, or spend time with their children.

A caregiver may help with:

• Companionship
• Meal preparation
• Bathing and dressing

• Daily routines
• Meaningful activities
• Supervision and reassurance

The care plan should be shaped around the person living with dementia, their routines, and the family caregiver’s needs.
