Useful Skills Worth Learning

There are many basic skills that can be handy to know about in a pinch. These may be skills that weren't taught at school or you haven't needed yet. However, learning a new skill can be fun and valuable in the future. If you do not have the strength or dexterity to perform a certain task it is still helpful to have the knowledge to diagnose a situation and teach or direct others. You may never know when an emergency will occur and having basic knowledge of certain skills could save lives.

First Aid

First aid is medical assistance for an array of topics such as cuts, burns, and choking. Have a stocked first aid kit on hand and know where to locate it. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure used in emergency situations when someone’s heart has stopped beating. This technique can help save lives and requires taking a class to get certified. Along with learning about Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and having basic first aid knowledge, you can be better prepared to assist in emergencies and potentially save lives.

Sewing

The art of sewing dates back thousands of years. Learning how to sew basic hand stitches or how to a sewing machine is a helpful skill. It can save a lot of time and money on clothes and fabrics such as buttons, hems, and tears.

Automotive

If you are a car owner you’ve probably learned a lot over the years from talking to your mechanic, having issues, or emergencies. Consider learning some basics about automotive skills that can be helpful in many different ways. Many tasks can be done safely at home without any special certification. For example changing or rotating tires, replacing filters, fluids, and other DIY tasks. Online videos and your car manual are great places to start. These skills can help you be prepared with the right tools and knowledge.

Cooking

We have all had our accidents in the kitchen at some point. Learning some new tips around the kitchen could save some cleanup and keep us safe. This covers fire safety, knives, cleanliness, and having the right tools for the job.

Remember that making mistakes and failing is part of the learning process. Nobody is perfect and we are all continuing to learn new things at any age. Taking time to focus on improving our knowledge and skills can help us be prepared, safe, and successful for our next adventure!
