Building Your Care Team

There are many factors to having a good team. Think about your favorite sports team or band. It takes dedication, preparation, time, and teamwork. A care team is essentially a group of people who provide care and support to a person who needs extra assistance. This may be emotional support, physical care, or supervision and guidance. A care team could be family, friends, paid attendants, neighbors, or other acquaintances. They are all involved in the support and care in some way or another. Let’s take a look at how you could start assembling a care team, no hammer and nails required!

Draft Your Roster

Make a list of people you regularly keep in touch with. Think about those who you trust, have leaned on, or supported in the past, and who you enjoy being around. You could make an additional list of your family connections as backup options. Consider making new connections at social events, through hobbies, and in your community.

Reach Out

Next, start to reach out to people on your list. This could be a text, email, phone call, or sending them a nice handwritten card. Many people appreciate the gesture to catch up and listen to them. Consider starting the conversation of aging and future planning. Even if it’s just brief check-ins, keeping in touch goes a long way in building relationships and maintaining social skills.

Make Your Game Plan

Think about where and how you want to age long-term. Everyone has different visions and life goals on their bucket lists. Let your wishes be known to your care team and get the ball rolling if changes need to be made for the present or future. This plan can evolve and doesn’t have to be set in stone. Being able to adapt and pivot in a changing situation is a great skill to have. This is your plan and wishes not those around you so your health and happiness come first.

Remember there is no uniform care team or care plan. Each individual has different abilities and needs to be met.
