Ways to Give Back to the Irving Community This Thanksgiving Season

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and give thanks. It is during the holiday season, that we are often reminded of how important it is to give back. Below are four simple ways you can give back to the Irving community this Thanksgiving season.

  1. Donate to a food pantry

1 in 6 people in North Texas are food insecure and do not know where their next meal is coming from. Consider donating your time or resources to a local food pantry such as; North Texas Food Bank, Mother Teresa Food Pantry or the Salvation Army of Irving. These organizations are dedicated to providing nutritious meals to local children, seniors and families in need. They offer several easy ways to give back to the Irving community including in person volunteering, donating food items or gifting a small amount of money through their websites.

  1. Participate in the Irving Turkey Trot

The Irving Turkey Trot is an annual fun run held on Thanksgiving Day at the Toyota Music Factory. All funds raised through event registration go towards the Irving Schools Foundation, whose mission is to maximize educational experiences for students, teachers and district employees through initiative programs, scholarships and activities that foster creativity. You can join in person or participate virtually! Click here to sign up.

  1. Donate to a local shelter

The winter season is a vulnerable and dangerous time for those who are homeless or cannot afford their gas and electric bill. Spend some time cleaning out your closet and donate old winter clothing to a local clothing drive such as The Main Place which provides clothing and personal items to homeless teens and families in the Irving community or Brighter Tomorrows whose mission is to support domestic violence victims through supplying them with essential items and a safe shelter.

  1. Donate supplies to a local animal shelter

Lastly, consider donating supplies to the DFW Humane Society, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that is dedicated to giving neglected animals a second chance at life through adoption. The DFW Humane Society rescues over 900 pets each year and provides daily care, food and enrichment for each animal. Click here to find out how you can support this animal shelter!
