5 Safe Swimming Tips For Seniors This Summer

Swimming is an excellent addition to any fitness routine, but it can be especially beneficial for older adults. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that's gentle on the joints while improving heart health, increasing flexibility, and strengthening bones. It also works for all muscle groups while having a generally low risk for injury compared to other forms of exercise. Plus, it's a great way to stay cool during those hot Tennessee summers. 

If you are considering reintroducing swimming to your fitness routine this summer, make sure you do it safely. Here are some swimming tips for seniors to help you get the most out of your time in the water while avoiding potential injuries.

Before taking the plunge this summer, consider these five vital swimming tips for seniors.

1. Don't skip your warm-up

Swimming and water aerobics are low-impact exercises that are gentle on your joints. That doesn't mean you should skip the warm-up routine, however. Do some gentle stretching at the side of the pool before you get in to help warm up your muscles. Once you are in the water, continue to stretch as you adjust to the temperature of the water. Doing this can help you avoid strain injuries in the water.

2. Sign up for a refresher course 

If it's been a while since you've been in the water, consider signing up for class. You can sign up for a beginner or intermediate class, or some local Knoxville-area pools offer refresher courses for seniors getting back into the water. If there isn't one available near you, talk to a swim coach about taking a few private lessons to help you get started. This can help you refresh on pool safety and the best swimming techniques.

3. Swim with a buddy or a group

Swimming is excellent for your physical health but can significantly boost your emotional and mental well-being. That's because it's a perfect opportunity for socialization. Sign up for a group class or walk the lanes with a buddy to get your healthy dose of socializing time. Swimming with others is the safest way to swim, too, because you'll be able to watch out for each other. 

4. Opt for an indoor pool

There are a lot of great outdoor swimming spots in Loudon, Clinton, and throughout Tennessee. However, you are better off choosing an indoor pool for safety reasons. Indoor pools are much more likely to have lifeguards on duty. Plus, an indoor pool reduces your risk of developing heat-related illnesses in the hot summer sun. 

5. Wear the proper footwear

Sometimes the most dangerous part of swimming is getting in and out of the water. Pool decks are often slippery, which can increase your risk of having a fall and injuring yourself. To reduce that risk, wear swim shoes in the water. These shoes are made for the pool and have a rubberized, grippy sole. That rubberized sole will help you walk in the pool and also help you avoid slipping when getting in and out of the water.
