Walking for Seniors: What Are the Benefits?

As age catches up with us, we may find it harder to stay active and mobile. Walking is a low-impact activity perfect for seniors who want to stay fit and improve their overall health. And that's not all; walking also has many intangible benefits that we will see in this read.

If you are a senior or know someone who is, encourage them to lace up their walking shoes on National Walking Day and every day after that! That said, here are some of the benefits that seniors can enjoy by walking regularly:

Improves Heart Health

Did you know that walking daily can reduce the risk of heart disease by 30- 40%? Walking is a great cardiovascular exercise. It gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation throughout the body. As a result, it reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.

Boosts Cognitive Function

Studies have shown that regular walking can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia. Dementia is a common condition that affects seniors, and it can be very debilitating. Walking keeps the mind active and engaged, which in turn helps to reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Strengthens Bones and Muscles

As we get older, we start to lose muscle mass and bone density. This can make us more susceptible to injuries and balance problems. Walking keeps our bones and muscles strong as we age. It helps to improve joint mobility, flexibility, and balance. All of these things can help to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

Improves Mental Health

Seniors can sometimes have a lot in their minds, from family to their own health. Walking gives them time to relax, de-stress and think clearly. It has been shown to improve mental well-being, self-esteem, and mood. So, if you know a senior who is feeling down or stressed, encourage them to take a walk. Additionally, it can help them sleep better at night and wake up feeling more rejuvenated.

It Helps to Maintain a Healthy Weight

Many seniors struggle with their weight, which can lead to a host of health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Walking helps maintain a healthy weight, as it is one way to burn calories and promote a healthy appetite. It also reduces the risk of obesity, which is a major problem among seniors.

Encourages Social Interaction

Older people sometimes find it harder to socialize, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Walking allows seniors to meet new people and interact with others. It's a great way to stay connected with the community and make new friends.
