Getting Comfortable With Technology: Knowing What Apps and Programs Are Safe (And Which Ones Aren’t) As a Senior Citizen

Technology can offer seniors improved quality of life, access to information, and easier communication with loved ones. If you've never used technology before or it feels overwhelming, it's vital that you learn some tips on how to get comfortable with the concept of computers and mobile devices. Learning how to differentiate between safe apps and programs and ones that are dangerous is also key.

Reasons Why Senior Citizens Should Get Comfortable With Technology

When senior citizens become comfortable with technology and learn how to use computers, tablets, and mobile phones properly, it can impact their quality of life significantly. Many websites offer access to a variety of helpful resources, such as medical information, news about current events and hobbies, online banking, and shopping experiences. Social media also gives seniors easier communication with family members and other loved ones living far away from them.

Tips For Learning About Technology

For those just starting out, taking classes on computers and mobile devices is a great way to get comfortable with technology. There are even specific courses designed for seniors that walk you through all aspects of use. You'll learn the basics of understanding what an app or program does and more complex topics, such as navigating the Internet safely. You can even learn how to go into your computer settings and find your Internet properties so you can clear your cache and cookies to help your system run faster.

In addition to formal classes, tutorials can be found online which provide helpful step-by-step instructions on how to use different programs and apps. For example, if you want to learn more about using Google Drive or Facebook in your day-to-day life, there are guides available online that will help you make sense of them. Additionally, researching trusted websites dedicated entirely to helping older citizens understand technology is also very useful.

Identifying Safe Apps and Programs

When downloading new apps and programs, it's important to identify which are safe. Make sure you research the reputation of an app or program before downloading, as well as look into reviews of users who have had experience with it. You can usually tell if a website is secure if it begins with an https identifier (the s is for secure), rather than just http.

You also want to be on the constant lookout for any red flags that might suggest a possible scam risk. Scams are increasing, and you need to keep your identifying information and your money protected. Say you receive an email. Always be sure to look at the address. Sometimes, the email will say it's from a specific company, yet the address will be full of random numbers or letters, or not match at all with the business name or offerings. This is a common red flag. Never click any links within emails from non-reputable businesses.
