Veterans Benefits and Resources Senior Veterans May Not Know About

Many veterans, from Korea to more recent conflicts, have never looked into the veterans' benefits available to them. Some assume they earn too much to qualify. Others believe benefits are only for combat injuries, so they never start the paperwork.

With Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, it is a good time to review the benefits that may be available. Senior Helpers Central Queens shares an overview of where to start.

Health Care Through the VA

Many older veterans may qualify for VA health care, even if they have private insurance or Medicare. Eligibility depends on factors such as

  • Service history
  • Discharge status
  • Income

The rules have changed over the years, so a veteran who was turned down long ago may want to ask again.

To get ready and apply, start with the VA health care page. The VA’s facility locator can also help you find clinics and medical centers within reach of home.

Pension and Help With Daily Living

The VA offers pension and disability compensation as two separate programs. Pension may help wartime veterans with limited income, and eligible surviving spouses may also qualify.

Eligible veterans and survivors may qualify for additional support through Aid and Attendance or the Housebound benefit. These benefits may help those who need assistance with daily activities, such as bathing and dressing.

The VA’s Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits page explains eligibility requirements and how to apply. Contact the VA to learn which benefits you may qualify for.

Support for Family Caregivers

A family member or friend who helps a senior veteran through the day may be able to get support too. The VA offers caregiver programs that include training and a support line.

Some families may also qualify for more extensive assistance. The VA Caregiver Support Program lays out the options in plain terms.

Burial and Memorial Benefits

It helps to learn about these benefits before they’re needed. Eligible veterans may receive:

  • Burial in a national cemetery
  • A headstone or marker
  • A Presidential Memorial Certificate for the family

Keep your DD-214 or other discharge documents in a folder your family knows about, since most benefit applications ask for it. If yours has gone missing, the VA and the National Archives have ways to request a replacement. Starting that request early gives you more time.

Getting Help With Veterans Benefits

Benefits rules can be detailed, and eligibility depends on each person’s circumstances. The VA can help you understand which programs you may qualify for.

You can also contact an accredited veterans service officer for free guidance with your questions and application.
