Our History

Our History

Senior Helpers of St. Louis and Webster Groves was founded in 2008 by Gene Davis in honor of his mother, Mary, whom he loves dearly. Her desire was to always remain at home, and because she had a large family, she was able to live out her life there comfortably and safely. Gene recognized that most seniors also prefer to remain at home and age in place, but in many instances, those dreams could not be realized due to limited family support or financial resources.

Gene elected to take on this challenge head-on and create a Private Duty Senior Care agency that would provide the Best Care Experience to all his clients. In May 2008, Senior Helpers St Louis and Webster Groves launched.

Senior Helpers of St. Louis and Webster Groves prides itself on having the most highly trained, professional CarePros, enabling clients to remain independent and safely thrive wherever they call home. Families enjoy peace of mind and are reassured that their loved ones are in the trusted hands of the staff of Senior Helpers of St Louis and Webster Groves.

Senior Helpers of St Louis and Webster Groves created Flex Care, a revolutionary care system that has simplified the process of setting up in-home senior care. Our agency offers the most flexible, affordable, and easy-to-use private duty senior care program in the industry.

Senior Helpers of St Louis and Webster Groves has been honored to assist thousands of clients in the community for almost two decades. The staff is dedicated and proud to offer unmatched care and support to all of our clients and their families. We consider it an honor when chosen to provide this essential service. We truly value every relationship that is formed as we support our clients and their families.

From 1 hour of care a week to 24/7 care daily; from basic companionship & ride services to end-of-life care, Senior Helpers of St. Louis and Webster Groves will always be there, providing compassionate, professional care you need and deserve to help you through the most difficult & challenging times of life.

Meet Our Team

Gene Davis

Gene Davis

Owner & President

Gene began his career working in his brother’s medical office while he attended Webster University. After graduating Webster with a Bachelor’s in Business, Gene worked in the banking industry for twenty years where he earned numerous honors, including Account Executive of the Year in 1994, 1996, and 1998. Throughout his life, his mother urged him to take his talent & skills in assisting and serving others into a more healthcare-focused role. After months of praying and asking God to help guide him, Gene chose to partner with Senior Helpers, opening a franchise in St. Louis. Gene reviewed the existing Private Duty in home care environment, finding a very weak selection and limited options available to seniors & their families as they faced the most difficult decisions of their lives, of setting up care in the home.

Based upon his findings, Gene knew he wanted to offer a unique approach to in-home senior care. He listened to what the community wanted in a Private Duty Senior Care company:

  • Maximum Flexibility
  • Excellent & continual communication
  • Affordable services that work with your budget
  • Trained, professional, truly caring staff

Gene created Flex Care to provide a program that meets all his clients' needs. He also adopted other creative care solutions to meet his clients' needs, providing alternatives that help them remain safe, independent, and happy at home. He has always been guided by the biblical principles of honoring God and serving others.

He also wanted to create a company that values the employees as they are the backbone, heart, and soul that make it all possible. Gene has worked hard to create this environment and is proud to have achieved this goal. Many of his Care Staff have been promoted to higher positions and have stayed with the organization for many years in caregiving roles. He has been told by many over the years that they have never worked for a company that treated them so well and offered them so much. Gene is very proud of and honored by the service that Senior Helpers of St. Louis and Webster Groves has provided to the community for almost 20 years. Our goal has remained the same: to provide our clients the Best Care Experience on every shift. He and his staff are dedicated and committed to making this a daily reality.

Gene stays busy managing the business but outside of work, his hobbies include a love of fishing, St. Louis Blues hockey, hiking, and coin collecting. He is also proud that he and his brothers were very active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. The values he learned in Scouting still carry through to how he lives his life now and manages the agency he cherishes greatly.

Gene owes all his success to his Care Team, his mother, and God!

Emily Hofherr, MBA

Emily Hofherr, MBA

Director of Client Services

With a clinical foundation in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Rockhurst University, a Gerontology Certificate from the University of Washington, and an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Lindenwood University, Emily brings both expertise and intention to her role. Her background in speech-language pathology gives her a unique understanding of cognitive decline, communication changes, and the complexities that come with aging. Her passion for senior care, however, goes far beyond her education. Emily’s journey is deeply rooted in her own family’s experience, watching her grandmother live with dementia. Walking through that with her family shaped how she sees care today. It gave her a firsthand understanding of how overwhelming, emotional, and at times uncertain the process can feel. And it’s what drives her every day, to make sure other families have a better, more supported experience than her own.

Emily has worked in assisted living and memory care settings, supporting seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other chronic conditions. She combines that hands-on experience with a thoughtful, personalized approach, helping families create care plans that are flexible, proactive, and centered around dignity and independence. What truly sets Emily apart is her ability to meet families where they are. She listens, she anticipates needs, and she helps guide next steps with clarity and compassion. Families don’t just gain a care partner. They gain someone who genuinely understands what they’re going through.

Outside of work, Emily enjoys hiking with her dog, practicing yoga and Pilates, and spending time in the kitchen!

She knows what it’s like to be in the home, to show up for clients day in and day out, and that perspective is what makes her such an incredible Scheduling Manager. Every schedule she builds, every adjustment she makes, it all comes from a place of truly getting it.

She is one of the most determined and hard-working people you’ll ever meet. No matter how busy the day gets, how many moving pieces there are, or how last-minute something may be, Smirror shows up with focus, patience, and a drive to make it work: for the client, for the caregiver, for everyone involved. And on top of all of that… she is genuinely one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She leads with kindness. She listens. She cares. A Certified Nursing Assistant since 2001 and a Certified Level 2 Medication Aide, Brandi has grown from caregiver to one of the most trusted leaders on our team. And she never lost what made her exceptional in the first place: her instinct to step in, lift others, and do whatever it takes to make someone feel cared for. As our Skills Trainer, Brandi is the backbone of our caregiver support. She doesn’t just teach skills, she builds confidence. She walks alongside our caregivers, making sure they feel prepared, capable, and supported as client needs evolve. Rebecca Barnes

Rebecca Barnes

Training Manager

Coming from Corporate America, Rebecca started with Senior Helpers as a companion care aide. Her passion for this work is deeply personal. Alongside her sisters, she cared for her mother during the final years of her life. During that time, she experienced firsthand what a difference caregivers can make. Some were truly exceptional, teaching her not only the skills of hands-on care, but what it really means to support both a client and their family. Others, unfortunately, fell short. That contrast shaped her perspective and left a lasting impact, showing her, just how stressful and overwhelming unreliable care can be.

Her goal is simple but powerful: to ensure that every Senior Helpers client and family receives care from compassionate, qualified, and dependable CarePros who are prepared for anything they might encounter. She is deeply committed to making sure no family has to experience the uncertainty or stress that comes with poor care.

In addition to leading training, she continues to step into the field and provide client care herself. Staying hands-on allows her to remain connected to the real challenges caregivers face and ensures that the training she provides is both practical and meaningful. She has a special passion for working with clients in the early stages of dementia and those navigating mental health challenges, bringing patience, understanding, and empathy to each interaction.

She takes great pride in being part of a team that truly cares, where going above and beyond is the standard, not the exception. For her, this isn’t just a second career, it’s exactly where she’s meant to be.

And truth is... she usually has them, or she is willing to jump in first to find them. Her work may not always be front and center, but its impact is felt every single day.

In her free time, she enjoys camping, four-wheeling, being with friends and family, photography, and being in nature. Sarah’s favorite thing about working for Senior Helpers is the genuine care we show our clients and caregivers!
