Supporting a Senior Veteran Who Is Reluctant to Talk About Their Service

Some veterans tell the same funny barracks story at every family dinner and never say another word about their years in uniform. Others won't discuss any of it, not even where they were stationed. If you care for an older veteran in Silver Spring or Hyattsville, that silence can leave you unsure how to show respect, especially as Veterans Day on November 11 approaches. Supporting a senior veteran may mean giving them space, following their lead, and finding quieter ways to recognize what they have given. Senior Helpers can also help with companionship, transportation, and everyday routines when a little extra support would make things easier.

Silence Has Many Reasons

Plenty of veterans grew up in a time when people just didn't talk about hard things. Some saw combat. Others served stateside, on ships, or in support roles and feel their experience doesn't measure up to what others went through. A few still carry painful memories they've never put into words.

Whatever the reason, they get to decide what they want to share. Service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force, in peacetime or wartime, is service.

Let Them Set the Pace

Pushing rarely works. Veterans who feel cornered tend to go quieter, and a parent who once shared small details may stop altogether if every visit turns into an interview. Leave the door open, then let it be.

Small cues often work better than direct questions, since a documentary playing in the background, an old photo on the bookshelf, or a visit from a friend who also served can spark conversation on its own. When your father does share something, listen without jumping in to fix or compare. If he stops partway through, let him.

Some find it easier to open up around other veterans. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has a tool for finding a post near you, and a post can give former service members a place to sit with people who understand without needing much explanation.

Ways to Honor Service Without Words

You can mark Veterans Day without asking for a single memory. Fly a flag on the porch, cook his favorite meal, or take him to a ceremony at a local memorial. Some veterans would love a trip to a war memorial on the National Mall, so ask him before you plan it. Others would rather skip the crowds and the speeches entirely and spend the day at home with family.

If he ever wants to record his story, the Library of Congress Veterans History Project collects firsthand accounts from veterans for future generations. Family members can volunteer to record the interview, and it's entirely his call how much he wants to share, whether that means a full account of his years in uniform or a few stories he's always liked telling over a meal.

When Professional Support Makes Sense

Watch for changes at home. Persistent nightmares, being constantly on edge, increased anger, heavy drinking, or withdrawing from family and usual activities may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Those signs do not tell you what is causing the problem, but they can be a reason to seek guidance.

Supporting a senior veteran can also mean helping them connect with care when they are ready. Veterans can learn about VA mental health services through the VA. If a veteran is in crisis, call 988 and press 1, or text 838255, to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Steady Companionship Without Pressure

For many older veterans, routine and good company matter more than going over the past. Supporting a senior veteran may be as simple as sharing a meal, watching a ball game, getting to an appointment, or having someone nearby who is comfortable with silence.
