An annual physical is one of the better hours you can spend on your health, and you can maximize it if you walk in prepared. Most of what gets missed at these visits isn't the doctor's fault; it's the sheet of questions you meant to bring and left on the kitchen counter.
Prepping for Your Visit
Jot things down as they occur to you. Start a running list on paper or the notes app on your phone. Anything odd this year goes on it: a fall in the driveway last winter, a stretch of poor sleep, the twinge in your left shoulder that comes and goes, the moment you forgot your neighbor's name for a long uncomfortable minute. Small things. Especially the small things.
Pull together your current medication list, including exact doses and how often you actually take each one. Not how you're supposed to take them. How you do. Include vitamins, supplements, and anything you buy without a prescription. Also gather any recent test results from other doctors, like the cardiologist or the eye specialist. Bring the paper.
Questions to Ask
Doctors work against a ticking clock, so the questions you save for the doorway may not get answered. Move the important ones to the top.
Ask about your top three symptoms. Then ask which of your current medications you might no longer need. Deprescribing matters for older adults, and the list grows over the years without anyone reviewing whether it should.
Ask about due screenings: colon, mammogram, bone density, cognitive screening, hearing, and vision. Book them before you leave.
You may want to check the Medicare annual wellness visit. It focuses on preventive care.
Keeping Your Appointment
Bring your list. Bring the medication bottles or a photo of each label. Bring the paper from the specialist. Bring a family member if you're worried about remembering what is said, and let them sit through the wrap-up.
It’s normal not to know medical terms. Ask the doctor to slow down. Ask them to write down anything you'll want to look up at home. A short handout beats a long lecture any day.
Book any follow-up before you leave. Add the referrals to your calendar. Update your medication list on paper if anything changed.
If the doctor's office has a patient portal, take five minutes and log in. Test results, notes, and prescriptions live there, and it's much easier to keep track of your care that way.
