Ways to Stop Shorter Days from Impacting Quality of Life in Fall and Winter

Fall and winter bring shorter days, along with colder weather. This can severely impact the lives of our older family and friends. They may not want to drive after dark, meaning that they can't go out to dinner or stay late at a gathering. They may also struggle when they can't go outside for a nice walk, due to the freezing temperatures in Evansville.

However, it doesn't have to be that way. Here are some tips to still enjoy life, even though the days are shorter and colder in Evansville.

Make Plans for Earlier in the Day

Go out to lunch instead of dinner. Watch a matinée instead of going to the movies at five at night. Have gatherings start at noon instead of three or four. All of these things will still allow you to be able to spend time with those you want to, without worrying about driving in the dark.

Find Someone to Drive You

If driving at night is hard for you, you can always ask someone to take you to and from the party. Maybe if you are going out to dinner with friends, one of them would be happy to pick you up, in order to enjoy your company.

Join a Senior Center

Many of these places offer workouts and exercise classes that are designed for our aging bodies. They may offer water aerobics, chair yoga, and much more, so you can stay fit, have fun, and enjoy being with friends.

Senior Centers Can Also Be a Great Place to Socialize

Even if you don't want to join their exercise programs, you may want to consider spending time at a senior center. Most offer many fun activities to keep your minds active and give you time to socialize with others who are also in the same boat as you.

Take Fall and Winter as a Good Time to Start a New Hobby

Maybe you have always wanted to try your hand at knitting. What better way to do so when it is too cold to do anything other than sit in front of the fire? You can start doing puzzles, reading, or even woodworking.

Fall and winter can be hard times for seniors. They are often stuck indoors for days at a time, due to the weather conditions. They may also find themselves with limited time to go out, due to how early it gets dark. For this reason, you may want to make breakfast or lunch plans instead of dinner. Not only are matinées cheaper, but you also don't have to worry about driving later in the day. If you do have to go out, don't be afraid to ask someone to take you. They won't mind because they want to spend time with you. You may also want to join a senior center in Evansville, both for socialization and exercise. It will help you stay in shape and spend time with some of your friends! Contact us to know more.
