FOUR WAYS SENIORS CAN KEEP THEIR MEMORY SHARP THIS SUMMER

Surprising Ways to Retain Sharp Memories for Independent or Assisted Living Seniors

As people grow older, they may notice a change in their ability to remember. Memory lapses can occur at any age, but it gets more upsetting as people get older.

“There are many ways to keep your mind sharp as you continue to age” said Director of Operations Mary O’Connor at the Senior Helpers Oak Brook Office. “It’s important to continue to test and challenge your mind. Summer is the perfect time to try these techniques because, you are out meeting new people or renewing old friendships.”

Here are a few fun ways to help keep your memory sharp.

  • Keep Learning - Keep your memory strong by engaging in mental activity that maintains individual brain cells and stimulates communication. Pursue a hobby or learn a new skill. Read- join a book group, play chess or bridge, write your life story, do crossword or jigsaw puzzles or take a class in music or art.

  • Economize your brain use - Don’t waste your mental energy trying to remember where you laid your keys or the time of your granddaughter’s recital. Take advantage of calendars, planners, maps, shopping lists and address books. Establish a place in your home where you place your glasses, purse, keys and other items you use often.

  • Repeat what you want to know - When you want to remember something you have just heard -- say it, repeat it out loud or write it down. This will reinforce the memory you have just heard.

  • Believe in yourself - Don’t fall into the trap of thinking because I’m aging I can’t remember things. Seniors have a better memory when they keep the messages positive. When people don’t think they are in control over memory function, their memory gets worse. Work on improving your memory and maintain or improve your memory skills for positive outcomes.

Other ways to help your memory is to keep moving. Exercising on a regular basis keeps your body and your mind healthy. In addition be sure to get enough sleep and deal with stress.
