Identify the Signs of Stroke FAST and Get the Help You Need Immediately

May is National Stroke Awareness Month and during this time we will be discussing how to identify the occurrence of a stroke and what to do when you suspect that a stroke has occurred, either in yourself or in a loved one. Implementing a constructive plan that eliminates unnecessary actions and that leads to a direct response may just be key in saving a life.

Strokes can be caused by either a narrowing and blockage of the blood vessels in the brain (Ischemic) or by an actual hemorrhage in a blood vessel. Lifestyle choices, such as weight problems or drinking/drug use can lead to a stroke as well as high blood pressure and cholesterol. Diabetes, sleep apnea, as well as the COVID-19 virus, can all cause this in an otherwise healthy individual.

There are easily identifiable symptoms and an efficient plan of action to get help immediately. The plan is effective and easy to remember.

Stroke Symptoms

The symptoms of a stroke include, but are not limited to:

  • Confusion when speaking, thinking, and acting; behaviors may be erratic, unusual, as well as laden with anxiety.
  • Paralysis of extremities; numbness of arms, legs, or face.
  • Vision problems; eyesight can disappear, become blurry, or blacken in either one or both eyes.
  • Sudden headache or migraine that is severe and even debilitating; vomiting, confusion, as well as dizziness are usual.
  • Problems walking will be evident; falling, stumbling, and passing out can also happen during a stroke.

A stroke is a very serious and life-threatening situation that demands quick thinking and quality, immediate care. The American Stroke Association and the Centers For Disease Control have emphasized the FAST program for immediate stroke identification, care, and calls for help.

FAST Response

The FAST response to a potential stroke is currently the most effective way to get help, for you or a loved one.

Face

Face refers to 'face drooping' and usually happens on one side of the face. It's easily identifiable if you have encountered someone with Bell's Palsy, but you will notice drooping of the eyelid, cheek, as well as the corner of the mouth. Is the area on the face numb?

Arm

There may be a weakness in one arm, usually on the same side as the 'face drooping'. Can the person raise both of their arms equally? How are they holding their fingers, wrist, and elbow?

Speech

Pay attention to the speech patterns of your loved one while assessing their physical countenance. Is their speech slurred or confused? Are they reciting numbers, for example? Can they repeat or answer a simple question? They may seem very agitated at their inability to effectively communicate with you. Stay calm to lessen their stress.

Time

If you or a loved one shows any of the above signs of a stroke, it is imperative that you call emergency services IMMEDIATELY. This may be a matter of life or death. This will affect your loved one's future quality of life. Quick analysis, as well as the response, may just save a life.

Much like a boy or girl scout, you must be prepared for anything. A stroke can happen to anyone at any time. A person's age or relative health status will not tell you if they are going to have a stroke. Your only options are awareness and education.

The person who suffered from a stroke may recover fully or never be the same again. They may regain the abilities they have lost with efficient and compassionate aftercare.

Quality Aftercare is Essential

Various forms of therapy are available to those who have survived a stroke. Physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, as well as other forms of support are available to anyone who has suffered a stroke. Medication may be given to prevent further heart troubles.

Most importantly, love, compassion, patience, and consistency will bring about the greatest results.
