Veteran's Guide to CTE, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, more commonly known as CTE, is an important subject for a large portion of our population, particularly our senior veterans. It is time to shed light on CTE: what it is, how it's diagnosed, and what treatment options are available. We’ll also go over how senior veterans can proactively use their VA benefits to access screenings and treatment. While professional medical advice should always be your primary source of guidance in health matters, we hope this can serve as a starting point to understand CTE and its implications.

Understanding CTE

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a degenerative brain condition usually found in individuals who have sustained repeated head injuries. Veterans, particularly those who have been in combat situations, are at a higher risk of developing CTE due to their exposure to such injuries. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, personality changes, and difficulty with balance and motor skills. Awareness of these signs is crucial for early detection and intervention. When you recognize the signs more quickly, you can begin effective treatment of the symptoms before they escalate.

Diagnosis of CTE

As of now, a definitive diagnosis of CTE can only be made post-mortem through a brain examination. However, medical professionals often diagnose CTE by observing a pattern of progressive symptoms and obtaining a thorough medical history. It’s crucial to be proactive about seeking medical attention if you, as a veteran, experience any of these symptoms. Timely discussions with your doctor can facilitate early detection and treatment planning, resulting in better outcomes.

Utilizing VA Benefits for CTE

The Veterans Administration (VA) has a plethora of benefits and services available for veterans. These benefits can be harnessed effectively for screenings and possible treatments related to CTE. It starts with a simple conversation with your VA representative, who can guide you on how to make the most out of your benefits. Don't shy away from seeking information and utilizing the resources available to you.

Treatment of CTE

The good news is while CTE is currently incurable, the symptoms can be managed with appropriate care and treatment. This often includes therapies to manage cognitive and psychiatric symptoms and maintain a level of independence for as long as possible. The VA has resources to help cover the cost of such treatments, making it less burdensome for our veterans.
