Going Greener and In-Home Elderly Care

When it comes to greener thinking and finding ways to reuse everyday items, it just takes a little imagination.  Reusing items is better for the environment and helps to reduce waste, and in many ways it can also reduce everyday spending.  Another way to reuse everyday items is to host a neighborhood swap or garage sale.  The saying goes, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”  No better way to reuse everyday items than to allow them to have new use in another home.

Every day, we find something in our home to toss out.  Whether it’s old food scraps, paper plates, or junk mail, there are always items being thrown into the garbage can.  With companies working harder to use more recyclables in their new products, it is wise to also follow trend as much as possible.  The more we learn how to reuse everyday items, the less of a contribution we make to the landfill.

Our everyday mail is bound to include some sort of junk.   Credit card inquiries and other useless mail items usually clutter up the kitchen counter.  When sorting out the mail, take out the blank envelopes and use them as scrap paper for random reminders and notes.  This is making great use of something that is otherwise a nuisance.

There many ways to reuse simple items like plastic grocery bags that make bringing home purchased items so much easier.  We can use the plastic bag to pick up after pets in the yard or litter box, protect fragile items when shipping or moving, and simply use as small trash can liners around the house.  Plastic bags are also useful to line a paint tray to make cleanup a breeze.  While not as fancy as the canvas reusable totes often sold at stores, a plastic bag can be reused to do its primary job:  sacking purchases.

We can reuse glass bottles for candlesticks and when those candles have finished burning, the candle ends can be used as wine corks.  Candle stubs are also great ways to start a fire on a cold and blustery night.  The glass bottle can also serve a new purpose in the home as a makeshift rolling pin when one cannot be found.

Old toothbrushes do not have to be thrown out with the junk mail.  There is life after brushing teeth including cleaning dust off keyboard keys, remove lint from sewing machines, scrubbing off mud from the bottoms of shoes and other hard to clean areas.
