Crafts for Halloween and Home Care for Seniors

Even though we are older than school-aged children and should stick to passing out the candy instead of trick-or-treating, it doesn’t mean we can’t get into the Halloween spirit!  Our senior loved ones can also participate in the holiday.  There are many ghostly crafts for seniors and caregivers that create together to help to bring on a festive mood to last long through to Thanksgiving!

If your elderly loved one would prefer a craft that is geared toward home décor, perhaps a visit to a craft store could prove inspiring.  Find a simple straw wreath, either new or recycle an old unused one by removing any attached ornaments, and spray paint it white.  Cut out some white felt ghost shapes and hot glue to the wreath.  When a few are placed on the wreath, the final touch is a sheer bow made of black and silver or white wide ribbon.  Now you have a festive way to welcome all guests to the home.

One fun ghostly craft for seniors and caregivers to create together is to turn some empty plastic milk jugs into ghost lights.  Simply wash out the empty containers and remove any branding and nutritional labels from the exterior.  Cut out a small hole in the bottom the jug to insert a few bulbs of a white Christmas tree light strand.  Do this to several jugs and link them together with the white lights.  When complete, simply draw various ghost eyes and mouths to with a permanent marker.  Now you have a fun and spooky front porch decoration!

Another fun ghostly craft for seniors and caregivers can also involve the grandchildren.  Simply gather up some rocks and paint the tops of them white.  With the permanent marker, draw on the eyes and mouths to create interesting and creative table dinner place markers.

It’s hard to believe that Halloween is already only a week away!  The air is crisper and the leaves have changed color.  As we prepare for the winter months ahead, it’s important to also take time to enjoy the fall weather that is here; especially before the temperatures start to dip below freezing.
