Senior's Guide to Preventing These 4 Winter Fire Hazards

As the winter season draws near, it brings with it festive cheer. Unfortunately, there’s also a heightened risk of home fires—particularly for seniors with coordination or memory challenges.

Today, we’ll take a look at common winter fire hazards. They may make winter and the holidays cozy and festive but can be serious fire risks if incorrectly used. We’ll also explore some preventative measures to mitigate these hazards so you can continue to enjoy them this season!

1. Candles

Candles, often used for light and ambiance, are among the top winter fire hazards. Ensure they are set on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable. Keep candles out of reach of pets or drafts that can knock them over or blow flammable materials into the flame.  Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to bed.

Battery-operated wax candles are an excellent and safe alternative to their wax-and-flame counterparts. Many even operate by remote control!

2. Fireplaces and Woodstoves

Fireplaces and woodstoves bring warmth and comfort but require diligent attention. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks. Always put out the fire before leaving the house or going to sleep. Woodstove doors close and latch properly. Setting barriers around them can also help reduce the likelihood of seniors falling against them.

Schedule a yearly chimney cleaning and inspection to prevent soot buildup and dangerous chimney fires.

3. Heaters and Furnaces

Ensure at least three feet of clear space around heaters and furnaces. Regular maintenance of your heating systems, including professional inspections, is also a must.

Use space heaters with built-in timers or plug them into a timing device.

4. Christmas Lights

It's crucial to check your Christmas string lights before hanging them up. Ensure they are tested for safety. Look for a label from an independent testing laboratory. Faulty lights can cause electrical shock or spontaneous fires. Also, remember not to overload electrical outlets and always turn off the lights before leaving the house or retiring for the night.

The Importance of a Fire Safety Plan

A well-thought-out fire safety plan can mean the difference between a catastrophe and a near miss. This should include a clear evacuation route from every room in the house, regular smoke detector checks, and quick access to fire extinguishers. Consider installing "smart" monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. They will alert a call center if hazards are detected, adding a layer of safety. Seniors should always have a phone handy in case of an emergency and have several flashlights placed around the home.
