How Seniors Can Build a Fitness and Activity Routine With Their Dogs |Senior Helpers Frederick

Staying active is a challenge for most of us, but especially as we get older. It can be hard to get up the energy to keep fit when you're a senior. However, it's still very necessary. One solution to this is man's best friend. Playing with dogs is a fun way to make yourself get outside and exercise.

There is a fun and creative way to help a senior build a fitness and activity routine with their dogs. Here's what you've been looking for.

Dogs Help Keep You Active

Even at the bare minimum, caring for a dog will require some level of physical activity. Regardless of any other factors, caring for a dog can be a great way to help your senior loved one get off the couch or out of bed.

There are various "levels" of activity someone with a dog can experience. If you're considering getting a dog for a senior, here are some of what they'll be able to do physically with their new companion:

Low-Level Activities

Low-level activities with a dog mean things like moving around to feed them, taking them out to use the bathroom, or tossing a ball for them to fetch and bring back. Many of these are the bare minimum for an animal's caretaker. They only require a little bit of energy to accomplish. If you're expecting a senior who can't go above this level of activity, look for older dogs or more docile breeds like the Bulldog or Maltese that won't require too much exercise.

Mid-Level Activities

Mid-level activities would be things like walking the dog around the neighborhood or pulling on toys with them. They aren't too intensive but will get you up and moving for half an hour or more most days. Most terriers and Shih Tzus are breeds that like this level of activity. Additionally, dogs that require extensive grooming (the Shih Tzu being one example) can fall into this level on their own. Brushing them out can be a workout in its own right sometimes.

High-Level Activities

High-level activities require a lot of energy. These include going for long walks or runs, playing at the dog park, or wrestling with your dog. Beagles, German shepherds, pit bulls, and most puppies fall into this category. They will require a good amount of activity to keep them properly exercised.

Benefits of Owning a Dog

Dog ownership has many benefits, fitness being one of them. Dogs are great companions for seniors, especially if they live alone. They provide a friend to talk with and care for, plus some protection in the event of an intruder or a health emergency. If a senior can appropriately dedicate themselves to the care and activity required, adopting a dog can be a rewarding decision.
