Cold Weather and Sore Joints: How to Manage Joint Pain and Sore Muscles This Season

During the cold winter months, many seniors notice increasing joint pain. The cold weather can cause joints to tighten up, and symptoms of conditions like arthritis may worsen. For some seniors, that can mean a decline in overall mobility. If you have serious muscle and joint pain during the cold winter months, talk to your doctor about potential solutions. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to decrease pain and improve mobility even in the cold.

1. Create a Plan to Stay Active

Getting up and moving around may sound like the last thing you want to do when dealing with joint or muscle pain. In many cases, however, moving around is the best thing you can do for those aches and pains. Make a plan that will help you stay active. You may want to:

  • Attend classes at the local gym or senior center
  • Go for walks outside
  • Walk on the treadmill if it's too cold to get outside
  • Try a stretching routine that will help improve overall mobility

Talk to your doctor about the right exercise routine for your specific needs.

2. Use Heat Therapy

Applying a heating pad to sore joints and muscles can help ease overall stiffness. You may also find other types of heat, like sitting in a hot tub or warm bath, beneficial for the entire body. Make sure that you do not allow heating pads and other devices to get too hot, and consult with your doctor if you have any concerns about inflammation.

3. Dress Warmly

If you know that you'll be heading outside, dress in warm layers to help avoid sudden temperature changes that can increase stiffness in your joints. If you step abruptly into very cold weather, you may also be more likely to tense up, which can further increase muscle and joint pain.

4. Keep Your Diet Healthy

A variety of foods can help increase overall joint health and decrease the pain you may have to deal with during the winter months. Consider:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fruit
  • Root vegetables
  • Fish
  • Olive oil
  • Dark chocolate
  • Garlic

A healthy diet may help decrease inflammation and put less strain on your joints. Furthermore, a healthy diet may help you lose weight, which will further reduce that strain. Remember to consult with your doctor before making dramatic changes to your diet.

5. Watch the Strain

In some cases, you may know that certain activities put more strain on your joints. If you're noticing more joint pain, try to avoid those activities so that you do not increase the pain you have to deal with.
