3 Fun Ways for Families With Children to Give Back to the Community During the Holidays

December is National Giving Month for a good reason. Multiple holidays during this time of year focus on charity and goodwill towards others, so it's only natural that people will want to participate in that. While materialism might have become synonymous with the season, it doesn't have to be that way. Here are three fun ways for families with children to give back to the community during the holidays.

1. Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to help the people in a community. Going somewhere to volunteer time, money, or another service can make a tangible difference for others. Depending on everyone's age and abilities, there are a ton of places that would benefit from volunteers. In the Westford area, one good option for this would be to work at a soup kitchen like St. Paul's, which serves hot meals every single day of the year. Many local hospitals are short-staffed and would appreciate some extra hands, especially this time of year. Ask around, and there's sure to be a volunteer opportunity somewhere in the community this season.

2. Charity

If volunteering isn't feasible for whatever reason, an alternative would be to simply give to charity. There are tons of causes out there, including those based in areas around Westford. For example, Restore the North Woods works to protect and expand the natural space down in Concord. Habitat for Humanity operates a chapter in Lowell, helping to build homes for people who need them. Local food pantries and the like could also use some help, especially if you want to give money. Blood banks and hospitals can always use some donations, which also serves as a good opportunity to help kids (and adults) get over their fear of needles. Just take a look around and see who's most in need this time of year.

3. Connect With Others

A big part of helping a community is building one. Getting to know neighbors and others in the community is a way to give back in and of itself. Forging stronger relationships with those around you is an excellent way to make new friends, see new perspectives, and figure out how to help others on a more personal level. It's also a great way to teach children about how to interact with others and do all of those things for themselves. It's easy to overlook, but many in the community are spending the holidays alone, meaning a simple visit from some kind of stranger could make all the difference.
