Ways to Support Health Equity Through Local Organizations in Your Area

When it comes to health, all communities should have equal access and opportunities. But the reality is that too often certain groups lack quality care due to various social inequalities. This is why health equity is so important. Health equity seeks to eliminate disparities and make sure all individuals, regardless of their economic or racial background, have access to healthcare services as well as resources for physical and mental well-being. In this blog post, we will discuss how easy it is for anyone in Honolulu's ever-growing senior population can support local organizations which are dedicated to creating greater health equity within our community.

How to Support Health Equity Through Local Organizations

There are a number of local organizations throughout Hawaii that can provide a great deal of support for people looking for a higher overall level of health equity or who need more help in their chosen industries.

Hawaii Office of Health Equity: The Hawaii Office of Health Equity is committed to promoting health equity across income levels, races, and more. The Department of Health Equity has only recently been reopened in Hawaii, so its full impact is not yet observable in the community.

The Fund for Health Equity: The Fund for Health Equity was created to make sure everyone has equal access to high-quality care regardless of race or income level. This fund supports partnerships between organizations that focus on improving healthcare education within our population and cutting disparities between different communities in terms of accessibility to care.

Center for Native & Pacific Islander Disparities Research: Located at the University of Hawaii John A Burns School Of Medicine (JABSOM), this center focuses specifically on researching disparities experienced by Hawaiian Natives/Pacific Islanders when accessing healthcare resources.

How You Can Fight for Health Equity

When it comes to fighting for health equity, there are several things you can do.

Talk to Your Care Provider

By regularly talking to your care provider, you can get a better feel of how they deliver equitable healthcare across the organization.

  • Do you have experience working with people from diverse races?
  • How do you ensure health equity across your practice?
  • Do you know what programs are available to help with payment?

Get Involved

Look for ways to get involved with organizations related to health equity across your community. You may want to:

  • Volunteer
  • Donate
  • Offer support to help individuals find those organizations
