How to Calm a Confused or Agitated Elderly Relative with Dementia

Caring for an elderly relative with dementia can be a difficult task. It is essential to remember that the behavior of confused and agitated relatives with dementia is not done on purpose or out of maliciousness. Instead, it's often due to their inability to advocate for themselves. In situations like this, being gentle and understanding is key—especially when attempting to calm your elderly relative down and avoid further conflict or upset.

Understanding the Causes of Agitation

When an elderly relative with dementia is agitated or confused, it can be helpful to attempt to understand the cause of their behavior. Agitation and confusion could be a symptom of physical pain due to underlying conditions such as arthritis, urinary tract infections, or constipation.

Fear can also play a factor. Fearful feelings that come from being in an unfamiliar environment or feeling isolated from friends and family members can cause them to suffer from a high level of confusion and disorientation, which can lead to agitated behavior.

Unmet needs such as hunger, boredom, and fatigue due to lack of stimulation are other potential sources of agitation. Often, addressing those underlying conditions or causes can help with overall agitation.

Responding Appropriately

When it comes to calming an elderly relative with dementia, it's vital that you remain calm yourself. Speaking clearly in a low voice can help ensure that your elderly relative is not feeling intimidated or threatened. When speaking, choose words carefully while avoiding long sentences and difficult concepts. This can make things less confusing for them.

Redirection is another important tool in your arsenal. To redirect the focus of your agitated relative, try introducing another activity such as doing an art project together or having them look at old photos. These activities can provide familiarity and comfort in the midst of a difficult situation. Redirection can help circumvent those big emotions and provide elderly relatives with comfort and support.

Offering two simple choices can also help keep them from being overwhelmed by too many options, allowing you to increase their sense of feeling in control and avoid compromising their autonomy. Giving choices can help avoid the slide into further confusion by giving back that sense of control, even in times when your elderly loved one might otherwise feel very out of control.

Lastly, offer comfort wherever possible. Some elderly loved ones may appreciate physical contact, including hugs or a light hand on the shoulder or arm. Others may prefer words of comfort. Keep your language as soothing as possible as you try to provide that comfort.
