6 Safe and Calm Summer Activities for Caregivers and Seniors

Summer is here, the sun is out, and the weather is warm. Coming up with a fun activity appropriate for seniors and their caregivers may take some creativity and planning, but it is well worth the effort. Here are six safe and calm activities for seniors and caregivers to enjoy this summer.

1. Visiting a Museum

Summer is not all about being outdoors. Museums are great places for seniors and their caregivers to go when they need a break from being out in the sun. The exhibits in museums are a great way for seniors and caregivers to discover new things. Many Honolulu museums are wheelchair-accessible for seniors who need it.

2. Going Out for a Summer Treat

Now that the weather is warm, seniors and their caregivers can step out and go for a treat. Most older adults have a go-to treat that instantly lifts their spirits. Getting out and grabbing and enjoying some ice cream is an excellent way to beat the summer heat. After all, going out should not only be restricted to doctor's appointments.

3. Visiting a Farmer's Market

Visiting a farmer's market is an informal way for seniors to socialize and support their local farmers. During summer, there are fresh fruits and vegetables for seniors and caregivers to enjoy as they stroll through the market.

The Honolulu Farmers market is open on Wednesdays from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Neal Blaisdell Center, 777 Ward Avenue. There's a range of fresh products to choose from, and your loved one will be looking forward to the next trip to the market.

4. Painting

When it comes to painting, seniors and caregivers have the freedom to choose a scene they enjoy and express themselves through their brushstrokes. Painting is a terrific method for dealing with stressful transitions or overcoming the summer blues. Seniors who can't paint on their own but want to express themselves creatively can enroll in adult painting classes.

5. Swimming

Older persons and their caregivers can enjoy a refreshing swim now that the weather is warm. Some seniors will only be able to dip their toes into the water, while others will be fine with low-impact water aerobics.

Spending some time in the pool is a great way for seniors to get some exercise into their daily routine that doesn't feel like a workout. Don't forget to protect your aging loved one from the sun's harmful rays by wearing sunscreen. In addition to being an excellent form of exercise, swimming provides a perfect opportunity to socialize and relax.

6. Visiting a Park

Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy the beauty of nature. Honolulu is home to several parks where older adults and their caregivers can enjoy being surrounded by nature. A park is a great place for seniors to watch kids play and enjoy the buzz of outdoor activity. Find a spot in advance that has plenty of shade and comfy seats.
