What's Coming Up In Medicare 2023: An Overview Throughout the Year

2023 has now arrived. And it leaves many people wondering, especially senior adults, about any potential changes coming to Medicare in 2023. Some of these changes may be very exciting for seniors enrolled in the program, so we're thrilled to compile them all in an easy-to-understand list for everyone to see! So, without further ado, let's get into the changes in Medicare that are coming this year.

Cap on Insulin Copay

Perhaps one of the most exciting changes to Medicare in 2023 is the price of insulin copays being capped at $35! In the past, many people were paying hundreds of dollars for this life-saving medicine, but that problem is no more. However, not every Medicare plan will cover every type of insulin, so be sure to check which plan you're currently on and what insulin will be covered under it.

Lower Deductibles

For the first time in over a decade, some Medicare deductibles will be going down. For example, the annual Part B deductible will be $226 instead of $233. While this is only a $7 difference, this may mean Medicare deductibles will continue to decrease over the years due to the rising cost of living. The government has also put a limit on the max deductible for Part D, capping it at $505. Unfortunately, this is about $25 higher than it was in 2022.

Free Vaccines

All vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will now be free for adults on Medicare. Some vaccines will be covered under Plan B, while others will be covered under Plan D prescription drug plans and some may require a copay.

Changes to Telehealth

Telehealth was previously covered under Medicare due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but this may change in the near future. Once the emergency declaration is lifted, which is believed to be relatively soon, telehealth will only be covered under Medicare for another 151 days. Don't worry though; this change hasn't come to pass just yet.

Access to Dental Care

Previously, Medicare did not cover routine dental care services, such as cleanings. This year, however, Medicare will begin to cover these necessary dental care services. Medicare will even cover dental work that will improve the outcome of certain health conditions.

Increase Cost for Part A

The Part A deductible per inpatient stay has increased to $1600, that's $44 more than it was in 2022. Those who haven't worked long enough to qualify for premium-free Part A will also see an increase in their monthly premium, which will now be $506 per month.

Emphasis on Behavioral Health

Medicare is now paying for licensed clinical social workers and other behavioral health specialists so patients can get the behavioral healthcare they need. Substance abuse services are also being expanded.

Improved Enrollment Access

People who are eligible for Medicare will no longer have to wait for coverage to take effect as long as they apply during official enrollment periods. As soon as a person is approved for Medicare, coverage will take effect immediately.
