Senior Wellness Visit: Why September Is a Good Time Past main navigation Contact Us

Why September Is Perfect for a Health Checkup

Once the beach traffic thins on Route 1 and the mornings start to cool, September in Kent and Sussex counties settles into a slower rhythm. That slower rhythm is exactly why fall is a smart time for a senior wellness visit.

Doctors' schedules loosen up between the summer rush and the December holiday crush. A visit now gives you time to act on the results before winter.

What a Senior Wellness Visit Actually Covers

A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is not a full physical, but it covers a lot of ground. Your provider will review your medications and check your blood pressure.

They may also screen for cognitive changes and ask about your mood, memory, balance, and daily activities. Bring a list of every prescription, vitamin, and over-the-counter product you take, with doses.

If you have not had a wellness visit before, ask your primary care office how to book one. It is covered once a year at no cost. Details on what's included are on Medicare.gov.

Screenings Worth Asking About This Fall

A few screenings tend to slip through the cracks. Bring them up if your provider doesn't:

  • Bone density scan, especially if you've had a fall or a fracture in the last two years.
  • Vision and hearing checks, both of which quietly worsen with age.
  • Depression screening, which the U.S. The Preventive Services Task Force recommends for older adults.
  • A1C or fasting glucose if you have not had one in a year.
  • Skin exam if you spent time on the Delaware beaches this summer.

Also ask about the flu shot, the updated COVID booster, and the RSV vaccine if you are 60 or older.

Getting them in September or early October puts protection in place before Thanksgiving gatherings.

How to Prepare So You Don't Forget Half of It

Doctor visits fly by. Ten minutes feel like three. Write down your three biggest concerns before you go and hand the list to the medical assistant when you check in. That single step keeps the visit focused on what matters to you, not just what's on the chart.

Bring a family member or a trusted friend if you can. A second set of ears catches details you'll miss. If a caregiver comes with you, ask them to take notes so you can listen fully.

And if there is a new symptom, no matter how small it seems, say so. Providers cannot help with what they do not hear.

Acting on the Results Before Winter

Getting a senior wellness visit done in September means test results, referrals, and any medication changes can be sorted out by November. That gives you time to address any follow-up needs before winter.

A cardiology referral in September becomes a January appointment. A referral in December becomes a March appointment. Fall visits give follow-ups room to breathe.

If a screening flags something, do not panic. Ask what the next step is, when it should happen, and what to watch for at home. Write it down before you leave the office.
