Senior Helpers Hires Future Nurses, Doctors and Physician Assistants!

How do you make Senior Helpers’ team of compassionate caregivers even better? By hiring nursing, pre-medical (pre-med) and pre-physician assistant (pre-PA) students! Senior Helpers hires caregivers with a variety of backgrounds to meet the needs of our clients: from homemakers to certified nursing assistants (CNAs). And now our agency is extremely excited to announce the augmentation of our team with the employment of nursing, pre-med and pre-PA students.

As forerunners in the nationwide movement for aging in place, nursing, pre-med and pre-PA students are becoming employed as caregivers with Senior Helpers, an in-home care agency focusing on care for the elderly. This work experience gives the students invaluable training working one-on-one with our senior population. Home care is the wave of the future and gaining a caregiver perspective with Senior Helpers will help the students provide the best care to their future patients.

In April 2014, AARP reported in “Livable Communities Baby Boomer Facts and Figures“ that “87 percent of adults age 65+ want to stay in their current home and community as they age.” Bobbie Hartz (MBA, CSA), owner of Senior Helpers states: “We are so excited to have our future nurses, doctors and physician assistants join our team of caregivers. They will be helping our senior population in need of care in their homes where they want to be.”

Courtney Kovacs, a University of Delaware (UD) nursing student remarks: "Senior Helpers has allowed me to grow as a future healthcare provider. The experience is not only invaluable, but the clients are what make my job so enjoyable! Each day brings new excitement and challenges, and I am so happy I have recently joined the team."Many other UD students are interviewing and scheduled for orientation and dementia training over the next few weeks. With the flexible work schedules offered by Senior Helpers, they will be able to work around their school schedules and see how home care agencies like Senior Helpers can support their future patients’ plan of care (i.e. transporting them to appointments, following prescribed diets and exercise regimens, giving medication reminders and more).

Working under the direction of Senior Helpers’ two registered nurses, the students will be oriented and trained for home care. Blake Turnbull (RN, BSN) is retired from Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS) Division of Public Health (DPH) and Mary Ann Redman (RN) has over thirty years of home care experience.

The students will receive extensive on-going instruction on Alzheimer’s/Dementia care utilizing Senior Helpers’ special Senior Gems® training, a proprietary program developed by Senior Helpers and dementia education specialist Teepa Snow. This simple approach to dementia care has been very successful in allowing our dementia clients to age in place at home.
