Happy Veterans Day and In Home Care for Seniors

Happy Veterans Day and In Home Care for Seniors

It is amazing how quickly the year has passed; it’s already November.  On the eleventh, we will celebrate our nation’s armed forces on Veteran’s Day.  This is the day to pay tribute and honor those who have sacrificed their time with their families and their lives to protect our great country.  While it should be a daily practice to thank a veteran, it is especially important on this national holiday.  Simply saying “thank you” is a small gesture that surely is appreciated.  Even something as posting a message on a social networking site to thank our veterans is special.  You never know who may come across that post and just needed to hear those words.

Our nation has celebrated freedom for centuries now, and a lot is owed to our military and its members.   Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11th.  This is a special day to celebrate our nation’s veterans who have sacrificed so much to keep America free.   Veterans Day is a wonderful reason to acknowledge your veteran loved one’s service and give them a sense of support and validation.

Another way to show your appreciation for a veteran on the 11th is to proudly display your American pride.  Wear your red, white, and blue.  Say the Pledge of Allegiance.  Fly your flag at your home or wear a pin on your shirt to show that you acknowledge this very important day on our calendar.

When an elderly loved one is a veteran, it is especially important to take the time to spend the morning or afternoon with them.  Take them out to coffee and offer a listening ear while they reminisce.  Bring along the grandchildren and remind them of the hero that is their grandparent.  The more ears that hear the stories, the more the memories and a piece of your loved one’s history is preserved.   If they have some memorabilia at easy access, perhaps they would appreciate a shadow box created to showcase their medals and achievements.

Being a military spouse is not easy now, nor was it in the past.  When thanking a veteran, whether they are young or old, remember to thank their spouse if they were with them during their commitment to the military.  A military spouse lives on an emotional roller coaster and they have to go months without seeing their loved one while they are deployed.  Something as simple as an email or text to a spouse of a veteran or actively serving soldier to say  you are thinking of them and are grateful for their sacrifice can mean so much.
