Quick Summer Trips for Seniors with In Home Help
Summer vacation time is upon us and we all seem to get the itch to travel the country. The days of summer are warmer, daylight lasts longer, and it seems like the perfect time to go on an adventure. When we include our senior loved ones into our summer trip plans, it is important to realize that there are some limits for some, when it comes to travel.
Medications and poor circulation make sitting for extended periods of time difficult for our senior loved ones. Making a trip within an hour or two of traveling is ideal. Taking breaks for walking and stretching is also very helpful for keeping the blood flowing. When planning a trip nearby, use a search engine online to look for museums, national parks, and beaches within a certain mile range, such as up to sixty miles away from home, or as approved by their physician.
If traveling to a local beach, river, or lake, it is important to remember to pack appropriate gear to protect against sun exposure and excessive heat. A senior loved one will require loose fitting and light clothing. A sun hat is also ideal to keep UV exposure to a minimum. Bring along an umbrella to also provide shade and a break in air conditioning in the car would also be helpful.
If a National park is within driving distance, then the same rules would apply as going to a beach. The good thing about parks, is there are usually trees available to provide shade. Keep in mind our senior loved ones are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and stroke, so staying properly hydrated is critical.
When traveling to a nearby museum or art center, the air conditioning should already be provided. There is minimal packing necessary for a trip to an indoor attraction; although traveling breaks with meals and medications as needed will be important.
When it comes to finding fun in the summer time months, look no further than your own backyard. Local eateries, festivals and shows are not only a fun way to spend time, but also a short trip from home. There’s something to be said about being able to run home to get a forgotten item easily or taking a break from festivities and being able to return after resting. The most important ingredient for a fun summer trip is togetherness. Being together to celebrate the warm months is what creates the lasting memories that will get us through the less pleasant months of winter.
