Meet the Santa Barbara office

More than 90% of seniors want to age in their own home with dignity but getting the right type of care can seem daunting.  At Senior Helpers Santa Barbara we believe that getting the best care for your loved ones should not be complicated. Mike Fasth opened the Senior Helpers Santa Barbara office in 2008 because of his passion for helping others and his interest in the growing need for in-home care services. Mike Fasth is committed to delivering the best possible in-home care to seniors in the Santa Barbara community.

We take in-home care seriously and make it a priority to provide the highest level of client service possible.  Over the past 10 years we have built an exceptional team of care professionals, each committed to remaining at the forefront of the in-home care industry through our proprietary ongoing training and education programs.

Our History

Senior Helpers was founded in 2002 by Tony Bonacuse with the help of Peter Ross after their firsthand experience in caring for their respective family members. Tony and Peter identified a need that was not being filled properly by the other companies.  They realized most seniors would prefer to age in their own home rather than move into an unfamiliar institution. Unfortunately, the options available to most seniors were very limited. Most seniors did not have access to well-trained, dependable and affordable in-home care. This was the mission-driven spark that started Senior Helpers.

The first office opened in Baltimore, and quickly developed a reputation for delivering excellent in-home senior care with their well-trained staff of professional caregivers. Based on the success of the Baltimore location, the company began to expand.  Over the past 13 years, the Senior Helpers family has grown to include a network of more than 300 locally owned and operated franchises across the United States.

Mike Fasth and Senior Helpers of Santa Barbara was proud to join the system in 2008.  Mike, a former Kinko's executive and founding partner used to help college seniors print and bind great looking papers.  During that part of his business career he was especially fond of helping senior adults the very busy Kinko's stores.

After a career with Kinko's Mike attended Antioch University where he gained additional insights about the challenges of aging in the United States. Then, after attending Antioch he bought a local landmark bicycle store, Open Air Bicycles. There he saw many vibrant seniors in their 70s, 80s, and 90s riding bikes and staying active. That inspired him to open Senior Helpers of Santa Barbara in 2008 as he found that Senior Helpers had many of the same characteristics of Kinko's - most importantly a focus on the customer.

Mike’s goal is to help clients live in their own homes, when they desire to do so. He always try to improve our services that we offer, and keeps abreast of health breakthroughs and consumer trends that will benefit our Senior Helpers’ clients and their families.

Our process

The first step in the process is a complimentary, initial in-home care assessment with a Senior Helpers consultant.  This assessment can help you understand the true needs of your loved one, and your options. Together we can discuss their needs, our senior care services and determine what’s best for your entire family.

We will cover:

  • Your family's specific goals
  • Your loved one's daily plan design and schedule
  • Pricing and payment methods
  •  Implementation process
  • Ongoing communication and follow-up plan

Meet the Santa Barbara Team

Shannon Workman

Director of Operations

I serve as the Director of Operations. My role is to oversee our organization and make sure we are delivering on our mission statement - To take care of our clients by providing high quality service. I have been with Senior Helpers for over 6 years and have been privileged to work with hundreds of clients and Home Care Aides in that time. No one expects to need professional help in the home but when you do, I want you to know there is reliable help available. Our Home Care Aides are compassionate and kind people. They make a positive impact on our clients’ lives and their dedication to their work inspires me.

I came to Santa Barbara through my studies at UCSB where I graduated with a BA in Business Economics and Psychology. I am a proud member of Junior League and am currently chairing our Fall Fundraiser Rummage Sale. I live in downtown Santa Barbara with my husband and enjoy cooking, exercising and spending time with friends and family!

Liah Ramirez

Care Manager

As the Care Manager my responsibility is to manage and develop all client services. Ensuring that our clients are safe and healthy at home is my main focus.

I have a regular communication process for new and existing clients including: first day of service calls, assessments, routine client visits, developing care plans and going with clients to medical appointments as needed or requested. I have been part of the Senior Helpers team for over 3 years and there is no bigger reward then enriching the lives of senior and bringing peace of mind to their families.

Before arriving to Senior Helpers, I worked for a healthcare insurance company specializing in Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans. My goal is to continue serving seniors and spend quality time with my 2 children, family and friends.

Elena Arguello

Scheduling Coordinator

I serve as the Scheduling Coordinator.  My role is to make sure our clients have a high level of satisfaction with their caregivers, and that our caregivers have a high level of satisfaction with their schedule. I have great attention to detail and take pride in making sure the schedule is done in advance and clearly communicated to everyone. I’m always ready to tackle a last minute appointment- I look at the schedule as one big puzzle!

In my first career, I was a Kindergarten teacher. I loved leading children through their first year in the classroom but moved on to pursue my dream of working for myself. I became a licensed Massage Therapist and ran my own business. Eventually, I went back to the stability of an office job.  I am so glad to be working in a role that directly serves this population.

I have been a part of the Senior Helpers family since May 2018 and have enjoyed every moment.
