Memorial Day and In Home Senior Care

Memorial Day and In Home Senior Care

Memorial Day weekend is upon us.  The holiday is reserved for remembering the fallen soldiers who fought for our freedom.  One way of honoring heroes on Memorial Day it to attend a local service, ceremony or parade hosted by the city.  Many cities also host concerts; this provides a great way to participate and socialize within the community as well.

Some of our elderly loved ones who are veterans may have experience they wish to share.  Personal perspective of wartime events are crucial to helping to shape our history and in time, hopefully can be recorded.  It is especially important to write these memories down for future generations so they can learn and respect the many sacrifices made by our veterans and fallen soldiers.   If you are the primary care provider for a senior loved one who is coping with a dementia related disease, you may have noticed they travel down memory lane from time to time.  This is an important occasion to take dig out a notepad and pen and jot some of those stories down.  Your aging loved one will appreciate keeping memories alive will help your loved one to tell their story and to stay relevant to their family and friends.

This Memorial Day, make sure that your red, white and blue are waving proud this weekend.  If your flag has been out of commission, now is the time to make it a priority to repair and hang it proudly.  The National Moment of Remembrance begins at 3PM on Memorial Day.  Take a moment to pay your respects with awareness or prayer.

A very simple way to show your respect and to honor our heroes is to purchase a poppy from a VFW veteran.  The veteran will surely feel your gratitude when you pay for your poppy.  This little reminder can be tied to your rearview mirror, purse, or worn attached to your shirt.  Memorial Day isn’t just about kicking off summer and hosting a party; it all starts with those who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep America free.

Memorial Day is traditionally used to mark the beginning of summer for most Americans.  It usually means a long weekend and possible mini vacations away from home.  With cookouts, get-togethers and celebrations, the true meaning of the holiday can be easily forgotten.  Many businesses and government offices will lower their flags to half-mast to remind us to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives to protect our country.  This Memorial Day, make it a point to take the time to honor our fallen heroes.
