Celebrating Veterans Day with In Home Care for Seniors

Celebrating Veterans Day with In Home Care for Seniors

When an elderly loved one is a veteran, it is especially important to take the time to spend the morning or afternoon with them, especially on Veterans Day.   Veterans Day is celebrated this weekend in America.  November 11th is an annual United States holiday made for taking the time to salute our military veterans and thank our brave men and women for their service and sacrifice.  Each November 11th, we are encouraged to show our American pride with our red, white and blue.  While it should be a daily practice, the eleventh is the perfect day to thank a soldier in uniform whenever we see them.  This is a special day to celebrate our nation’s veterans who have sacrificed so much to keep America free.   Veterans Day is a wonderful reason to acknowledge your veteran loved one’s service and give them a sense of support and validation.

Take your Veteran loved one out to coffee and offer a listening ear while they reminisce.  Many businesses now offer discounts for veterans and active military on weekly and sometimes daily basis.  On Veterans Day, many restaurants have begun offering a free meal to veterans and their families.  Bring along the grandchildren and remind them of the hero that is their grandparent.  The more ears that hear the stories, the more the memories and a piece of your loved one’s history is preserved.   If they have some memorabilia at easy access, perhaps they would appreciate a shadow box or a photo book created to showcase their medals and achievements.

Veterans Day is a wonderful time to take a moment to thank our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen for their service and dedication to protect our Nation’s freedom and rights.  You may have an elderly loved one in your life who has battled in a war.  November 11 is a great time to inquire of your loved one’s war stories; if they are comfortable talking about them.  Why not take the time to find out your elderly loved one’s Veterans Day history.  You never know what interesting facts you may learn!

Being a military spouse is not easy now, nor was it in the past.  When thanking a veteran, whether they are young or old, remember to thank their spouse if they were with them during their commitment to the military.  A military spouse lives on an emotional roller coaster and they have to go months without seeing their loved one while they are deployed.  Something as simple as an email or text to a spouse of a veteran or actively serving soldier to say you are thinking of them and are grateful for their sacrifice can mean so much.
