In Home Senior Care and Fall Fun Plans

It’s finally October and the fall season is officially in full swing.  The harvesting has begun and the pumpkin spice lattes are being served.  It’s time to get ready for the cooler weather by pulling out the warmer clothing items and putting away summer attire.  While it may feel sad to pack away summer; it is refreshing to breathe in the crisp autumn air and sit around the fire for additional warmth at night.  The weather is unpredictable from day to day as the season changes from hot summer to cooler fall temperatures.  The more comfortable weather makes participating in outdoor activities a little easier for senior loved ones who might have been cautious with the summer heat and sun.

Now that we can turn off our air conditioners, your senior loved one might find joy in warming up the oven.  If your elderly loved one enjoys baking, perhaps you can make some bread together.  Bring the grandkids over and have them learn how to make a delicious homemade apple pie.  Perhaps those apples came from a recent visit at your local orchard.   Nothing quite feels more like home than the warmth of a kitchen full of delicious treats.

Fall is the perfect time to add outings to a senior loved one’s daily activities.  Many are simple and easy to do near the home. Taking a stroll around the neighborhood and park, visiting a local arboretum and taking drives along scenic routes to view the vibrant fall colors.  Few activities can invigorate people as well as a brisk stroll through crisp autumn air.  Taking a pet for a walk is also a fun way to get some fresh air and give the pup some exercise!

Some fall friendly activities for seniors include visiting the local apple orchard or pumpkin patch.  There are usually hayrides and fresh cider to enjoy while also spending time with family.  The outing is sure to bring a smile to an elderly loved one’s face, as well as a new pumpkin to help decorate their home.  If mobility issues are a concern; perhaps picking up a pumpkin to deliver to their home will bring some seasonal cheer.  Grandchildren will enjoy carving the pumpkin or simply drawing a face using marker with their senior loved one.

If hay rides are a bit too bumpy, your senior loved one might enjoy visiting a nearby greenhouse to check out the newest fall flowers.  Beautiful mums ranging in colors from orange to red to yellow can really spruce up and bring vibrancy to any home.   As you and a senior loved one are out; take the time to collect flowers and leaves for future crafts and unique decorations.  Bright leaves and falling pinecones of the season make the perfect dash of nature for any craft project.  Leaves can be used to decorate on vases and flowers can be dried and pressed in wax paper to be framed.  The artistic creations promote creativity, enhance social engagement and help create new memories.
