Senior Care at Home and Cold Weather Activities

Senior Care at Home and Cold Weather Activities

With the major fall holidays beginning at the end of October, the temperatures are officially dropping.  The need for a coat in the evenings and early mornings is becoming unavoidable.  The days are getting shorter and chilly nights are growing longer.  With winter fast approaching it is time to prepare our homes and yards for the colder air.  There’s a new chill in the air as the fall season settles in.  As the weather gets cooler, the activities that can be enjoyed outdoors become limited, especially for the elderly.  Winter will inevitably show up, and it’s important to keep active despite the frigid temperatures.

There are some relaxing and fun ways to safely spend time with an elderly loved one during the winter months indoors.  Sometimes all a person needs to recharge is a nice cup of hot coffee or tea while enjoying conversation by the fireplace.  Lots of nostalgic holiday movies are beginning to play on television.  It can be a wonderful way to get in to the festive spirit and recall past fond memories of gathering with family during the holiday season.

Now is also the time to think of some easy fall decoration ideas that you can do at home with your senior loved one.  If you live near a farm or local pumpkin patch, take a look around for some beautiful, large gourds that can be easily turned into unique vases for tabletop flowers.  A small, swan shaped gourd could be used as a hanging vase by cutting a hole near the neck and hollow out enough space for fall flowers like mums, black-eyed Susans and other favorites.

If you and your senior are adventurous when it comes to crafts, you could venture outdoors to collect pine cones.  These not only smell really nice, but could be glued onto a wreath to create a new festive decoration for your loved one’s front door.  Simple additions such as and orange bow and some artificial fall leaves will be the perfect touch to your fall decoration idea.

You may remember as a child the simple beauty of tracing over an impressive leaf and viewing that as art.  There are many ways to incorporate the wide range of fall colors in the falling leaves in a new form of art.  You could press some orange, yellow and red leaves, and then tape them to crafting paper to create simple, seasonal art that can be hung on the wall over the couch or in other rooms of the house that could use some livening up.  Sometimes just a mini arrangement of freshly fallen leaves placed in a tiny vase is enough to bring fall into the home.
