Don't Let Cold Mornings or Evenings Interrupt Your Daily Walk: 5 Tips for Seniors in Palo Alto

Senior Helpers® is dedicated to helping seniors enjoy a quality of life and refinement each season. One issue that can dampen the welfare and lives of our senior loved ones is when the Mediterranean twilight and early evenings become too chilly. Regardless, there are still plenty of fun ways to fight against winter's chill. Here are our favorite ways to combat the cold of homes in the valleys and enable senior citizens to have a fulfilling winter:

1. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Many illustrious and well-respected individuals as well as their care teams are located in this region. This area is known for its expansive real estate and equally picturesque views. Yet, long-time residents will warn that no one is immune to the frost and bite of winter. A little planning and matching with the right ensembles helps caregivers and clients meet the challenges of the local weather. Weather elsewhere in the United States during this time of year might equate to snow flurries, but California retirees should prepare for increased precipitation with umbrellas, hiking shoes, knitted beanies, and cashmere or wool accessories.

2. Exercise with a companion.

It might be tempting to discourage persons over the age of 65 from waking up in the early hours of the morning and heading out into the local neighborhood for a morning walk. However, caregivers can encourage more reluctant seniors to walk at other times, accompany the morning types, and offer to walk with seniors who prefer walking at dusk. Many people enjoy the meditation aspects of these solitary journeys, but other senior loved ones might feel loneliness and sorrow at these junctures in the day. If your senior client expresses sadness at less walking time and the prospect of seeing fewer people out and about, then offer to walk with them.

3. Explore new, natural parks.

While it's true that unpleasant weather can put a damper on the amount of time spent outside (and when), it also impacts everyone else. Some outdoor green spaces are very crowded and nice days can hamper someone's ability to exercise or experience peace and quiet. For adventurous types, suggest that seniors explore outdoor spaces and parks like the Baylands Nature Preserve during winter. Only the most dedicated sports enthusiasts will continue walking, jogging, and cycling all year. In chillier times, there is less tourism and crowding.

4. Consider classes for public exercise.

Community environments like the Palo Alto Adult School offer many senior-friendly classes that are fun and offer seniors a welcome respite from challenging weather. On some days, it's simply too much for seniors to focus on less stimulating activities like walking when the weather is extremely uncomfortable. In that type of setting, it might be time to suggest indoor classes or outdoor fitness meetings that incorporate more games into their programs. At times, more enjoyable recreational activities can help senior clients focus less on the temperature and more on learning a new sport or dance skill.

5. Encourage seniors.

Offer to encourage seniors and provide verbal support when they try to maintain their routine, despite the weather. With enough positive support and enthusiasm, seniors will be more likely to continue participating in healthy activities. If they have already made it a point to get exercise each day or lose weight, then motivate them.
