For Steven Nickens, owning Senior Helpers has always been about something bigger than running a business—it’s about families, relationships, and being there for people when they need help the most.

Steven’s journey into senior care began with his own family. As his mother grew older and experienced significant health challenges, including a stroke, Steven found himself asking the same questions so many families face: How do we keep Mom safe? How do we preserve her independence? And how do we make sure she continues to enjoy the best possible quality of life?

Those personal experiences ultimately led Steven to Senior Helpers. Now, six years later, what began as a desire to help families navigate those difficult decisions has grown into a genuine passion for serving seniors and their families throughout Huntington Beach, Sunset Beach, Surfside, and the surrounding communities.

Before Senior Helpers, Steven spent more than 25 years in sales, management, and executive leadership, including roles with companies such as Staples, GE, and Empire Today. Throughout his career, one thing has remained consistent: his passion for developing people, building strong teams, and helping others reach their potential. Today, he brings that same philosophy to Senior Helpers.

Steven’s commitment to seniors extends well beyond his business. He is actively involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and serves as Executive Event Chair for the Huntington Beach Walk to End Alzheimer’s, helping bring together families, businesses, volunteers, and community leaders to raise awareness and support the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Steven is especially proud of the Senior Helpers organization he has built alongside his wife and business partner, Kim. Together, they share a commitment to providing compassionate, dependable care while creating a culture where caregivers feel valued and families know they have someone they can count on.

For Steven and Kim, Senior Helpers isn't simply a business—it has become an important part of their lives and their connection to the community they serve.

As co-owner of Senior Helpers, Kimberley “Kim” Nickens has spent the past six years helping build an organization dedicated to providing compassionate, dependable care to seniors, veterans, and families throughout the communities they serve.

For Kim, senior care has always been personal. Her journey began with concerns about her own aging parents, particularly after her father experienced several falls while living hours away in Northern California. That experience gave her a firsthand understanding of the questions and worries families face when an aging loved one begins needing additional support.

Together with her husband and business partner, Steven Nickens, Kim has helped grow Senior Helpers from a new business into an established local care provider. As an owner, she is actively involved in the direction of the company, its culture, community partnerships, and commitment to providing families with an exceptional care experience.

Today, Kim also serves as Community Relations Manager, allowing her to spend much of her time doing what she does best—building relationships. She works closely with healthcare professionals, senior organizations, veterans’ resources, families, and community partners to connect people with the services and support they need.

Kim is a Community Educator for the Alzheimer’s Association and is passionate about increasing awareness and helping families better understand Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. She is also deeply committed to serving veterans and their families, and considers helping Senior Helpers’ VA clients receive the care they have earned one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

Before Senior Helpers, Kim spent more than 20 years in executive sales within the healthcare and financial industries, including successful careers with GE, LendingClub, Wells Fargo, and Alphaeon Credit.

After six years as a Senior Helpers owner, Kim’s philosophy remains simple:

“If we can bring comfort to families, help seniors maintain their independence, and make life a little easier for someone who needs us, then we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.”

For Kim, Senior Helpers is much more than a business she owns. It is something she and Steven have built together, a way to serve their community, and an opportunity every day to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

Silvia Castillo is a compassionate and results-driven healthcare management professional who leads with purpose and integrity. As Care Team Manager for Senior Helpers of Northern Orange County, Silvia blends strong leadership with genuine empathy, ensuring that every client and caregiver experience is rooted in respect, compassion, and quality care.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University and an MBA in Healthcare Management from Western Governors University. With this unique balance of scientific knowledge and executive training, Silvia brings clarity, structure, and heart to her leadership.

Silvia is deeply passionate about serving seniors and creating meaningful connections that enhance quality of life. Her thoughtful and steady approach helps guide her team through challenges with grace and purpose, setting a standard of excellence throughout the organization.

Outside of work, Silvia enjoys walking her husky, cycling, and hiking quiet nature trails. She is also an avid reader of leadership books and finds calm through puzzles and a cup of tea — a reflection of her balanced and mindful leadership style.

Yoli brings an exceptional wealth of experience to her role as Scheduler. With a strong background in customer service, back-office operations, logistics coordination, and staff coordination within home care environments, she has developed a deep understanding of client needs and internal workflow processes. Her number one priority is ensuring there is no lapse in care coverage for our clients while also helping our caregivers maintain full and consistent schedules. Her ability to learn quickly, think critically, and adapt to evolving challenges makes her a reliable and invaluable member of our team.

Yoli is naturally inclined toward leadership, fueled by her passion for both teaching and continuous learning. She approaches every task with dedication, accuracy, and a proactive mindset—qualities that make her an essential contributor to the smooth day-to-day operations of our agency.

Outside of work, Yoli enjoys diving into romance novels and psychological thrillers, especially those with intricate, mind-bending twists. She loves singing, spending time outdoors, and is an avid fan of complex horror films. She also has a curiosity for new foods and unique flavors, always eager to explore something different.

Yoli’s blend of professionalism, curiosity, and drive truly sets her apart. Her commitment to personal and professional growth continues to inspire those around her, and we are thrilled to have her on our team.

Samantha Montgomery brings more than 15 years of experience in operations, logistics, and organizational support to Senior Helpers. A proud Long Beach resident, she is known for being organized, detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and always willing to help.

As our Office Administrator, Samantha plays an important role in keeping our office running smoothly. She supports our clients, families, caregivers, and care team by coordinating communication, maintaining accurate records, assisting caregivers, and helping ensure the many details behind great care are handled efficiently and with compassion.

Samantha enjoys being part of a team whose work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors and their families. She takes pride in creating a welcoming and supportive experience for everyone who interacts with Senior Helpers.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys exploring Long Beach’s hidden food gems with close friends and taking long road trips across the country to visit family and friends. Whether at work or on the open road, Sam values the people and relationships she encounters along the way—and brings that same warmth and genuine care to the Senior Helpers family every day.
