Senior Helpers' Parkinson’s Disease In-Home Care Training Program

At Senior Helpers, our caregivers understand and prioritize the need of adequate training for caregivers supporting individuals who are living with Parkinson’s. Caring for those living with Parkinson’s disease can be a difficult task, as caregivers have to adapt and adjust to new challenges as the disease progresses.

The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can vary from day to day, even from hour to hour, and thus it takes patience and skill to know when to intervene and assist and when to allow the individual to complete a task independently. Caregivers have to be extremely responsive to subtle changes in motor function and mood of a person living with Parkinson’s. Senior Helpers recently announced that we have developed and have begun to implement the Parkinson’s Care Program which offers specialized training and certification for caregivers to adequately prepare them to assist those living with Parkinson’s disease.

This is the second disease management training program that Senior Helpers has developed and implemented, along with Senior Gems –our Alzheimer’s and Dementia training program. We worked in conjunction with leading experts from the National Parkinson Foundation’s Center of Excellence to develop this original and innovative training program. The program is designed to offer caregivers expert training and education so that they are able to create individualized care plans for those living with Parkinson’s disease. The program helps inform caregivers about how the disease advances and changes and provides specific training so that caregivers know how to handle the limited range of mobility and movement that those living with Parkinson’s disease experience.

The entire mission of Senior Helpers is to help those who need extra care remain in their home and remain as independent as possible, by providing an in-home Parkinson’s care training program, Senior Helpers is able to optimize this goal. The training program provides training on specific motor and non-motor symptoms, as well as strategies for recognizing and managing those symptoms.

Senior Helpers, along with providing this Parkinson’s specific in-home care, supports those living with the disease through a partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research –an organization that has funded nearly $70 million in research. Senior Helpers serves as the exclusive in-home care sponsor of the Foundation’s online care giving resources. At Senior Helpers we recognize that Parkinson’s disease is a unique challenge for caregivers and thus we have invested extensively to provide training for our caregivers with the best information and tools we have access to, so that all Senior Helper clients who live with Parkinson’s can live as comfortably and independently as possible.
