A Life of Service
Harold served in the U.S. Navy's Amphibious Forces from 1943 to 1945 aboard the USS LSM-455 in the South Pacific during World War II.
His ship transported Marines, vehicles, and equipment directly onto enemy beaches during island invasions.
Listening to Harold share his memories was both humbling and inspiring.
During one landing, his ship became stranded on the beach in the middle of battle before a tugboat was finally able to pull it back into the water. He also recalls the possibility of shooting down an enemy aircraft while serving on a .50-caliber machine gun.
Stories like Harold's remind us that history isn't only found in books. It's sitting beside us, often waiting for someone to ask.
The Meaning Behind a Quilt of Valor
A Quilt of Valor is more than a handmade quilt.
It is a heartfelt expression of gratitude presented to veterans who have been touched by war.
Each stitch represents appreciation for their courage, sacrifice, and service to our country.
Seeing Harold wrapped in his quilt was an emotional reminder that honoring our veterans never goes out of style.
A Community Coming Together
This special presentation would not have been possible without the kindness and dedication of so many people.
A heartfelt thank you to Linda Novotny, Veteran Coordinator with Quilts of Valor, for creating Harold's beautiful quilt, and to Vietnam veteran Paul Evenson for presenting it during the ceremony.
It was a privilege to witness our community come together to recognize someone who has given so much.
Why Moments Like This Matter
At Senior Helpers, we have the honor of caring for many veterans throughout Gilbert, Chandler, Maricopa, Tempe, and the East Valley.
Every veteran has a unique story.
Some proudly share their experiences. Others have carried those memories quietly for decades.
Taking the time to listen, recognize their service, and preserve their stories is one of the greatest privileges we have.
Because while home care is about helping with everyday needs, it's also about honoring the lives people have lived and the sacrifices they've made along the way.
Supporting Veterans Beyond Care
In addition to providing personalized in-home care, we're proud to help veterans and their families connect with available VA benefits and resources that may help them remain safely and comfortably at home.
It's one small way we can give back to those who have given so much.
Thank You, Harold
