Caring for Someone With Dementia? The GUIDE Program May Offer Respite Support
Caring for someone living with dementia often begins with small acts of love.
A spouse starts helping with appointments. A daughter takes over grocery shopping. A son stops by more often to make sure everything is okay.
Over time, those small responsibilities can become a full daily routine. The person providing care may be balancing work, family, errands, and sleepless nights while quietly wondering how long they can keep doing everything alone.
That is where respite care can help.
For eligible families in Gilbert, Chandler, Maricopa, and communities throughout the East Valley, the CMS GUIDE Program may provide respite support while a loved one living with dementia receives care at home.
What Is Respite Care?
Respite care gives a family caregiver time to step away while a trusted caregiver supports their loved one.
That time may be used to:
- Attend a medical appointment
- Go to work
- Run errands
- Spend time with children or other family members
- Rest and recharge
- Simply take a break without worrying that a loved one is alone
Respite care is not about walking away from caregiving. It is about making sure one person does not have to carry every responsibility by themselves.
How Does the GUIDE Program Support Families?
GUIDE stands for Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience.
The program was created to support people living with dementia and the family members or friends helping care for them.
For eligible families, the GUIDE Program may include:
- Personalized dementia care planning
- Care coordination
- Caregiver education and guidance
- Connections to helpful community resources
- Respite care support
- Ongoing help as needs change
The goal is to help people living with dementia remain supported at home while giving family caregivers practical guidance and room to breathe.
Who May Qualify for Respite Care Through GUIDE?
To participate in the GUIDE Program, the person living with dementia generally must:
- Be enrolled in Traditional Medicare
- Have a suspected or confirmed dementia diagnosis, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, or another form of dementia
- Live at home or in an eligible residential community
A person may not qualify if they:
- Are enrolled in Medicare Advantage
- Participate in a Special Needs Plan
- Live in a long-term care facility
- Are currently receiving hospice services
- Participate in a PACE Program
Eligibility is confirmed through the GUIDE Program, so families should not assume they do or do not qualify without asking questions first.
What Can Respite Care Look Like at Home?
Respite care should fit the family, not the other way around.
For one family in Chandler, it may mean having someone stay with Dad for a few hours while his wife attends an appointment.
For another family in Gilbert, it may mean regular support each week so an adult daughter can work, grocery shop, or spend time with her own children.
Depending on the care plan, a caregiver may help with:
- Companionship
- Meal preparation
- Bathing and dressing
- Medication reminders
- Light housekeeping
- Familiar daily routines
- Meaningful conversation and engagement
- Supervision and reassurance
The goal is to support the person living with dementia while giving the family caregiver time to rest or take care of other responsibilities.
Why Caregiver Breaks Matter
Family caregivers often wait too long before asking for help.
They may feel guilty. They may worry that no one else understands their loved one’s routines. They may tell themselves they can rest later.
But when one person is carrying everything, exhaustion can affect sleep, patience, health, and the ability to continue providing care.
Even a few hours of support can make a meaningful difference.
Respite care gives family caregivers a chance to step away, return refreshed, and continue showing up for the person they love.
