Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, demonstrated various exciting talents. In addition to studying architecture and designing his beautiful Monticello home, he also loved wine and viticulture. While serving as Washington's Secretary of State, he also unofficially held the Sommelier position.
Presidents of the 19th Century
We know Abraham Lincoln as the president who led the country through the Civil War. But a closer look at history also tells us of his wrestling past. Before politics, Lincoln was known for his considerable strength and only lost once in approximately 300 matches!
Andrew Johnson, who assumed office after the tragic assassination of Lincoln, entered the White House as a skilled tailor. He continued to make his suits even during his presidency, taking pride in his craft.
Presidents of the 20th Century
One of the presidents we explored from the 20th century includes Theodore Roosevelt. Many know him as an avid outdoorsman and environmental conservationist. Roosevelt also loved judo. He trained regularly in the White House, even attaining a third-degree brown belt.
Franklin D. Roosevelt's leadership marked two distinct eras of U.S. history. Not too surprisingly, Roosevelt is on the record as the first president to appear on television. They televised his appearance at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City.
Recent Presidents
In more recent history, we may remember Ronald Reagan as the actor-turned-politician known for his wit and charm. Many don't know that Reagan was a lifeguard and saved 77 lives in his youth.
We know Barack Obama, the 44th president, for his inspiring speeches and love for basketball. But he also won a Grammy for the audio version of his memoir, "Dreams From My Father."
