Shining a Light on Parkinson’s Disease
Spring is in the air and April is Parkinson's Awareness Month! Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive condition of the nervous system that affects movement and can have cognitive impacts. By 2030, there will be an estimated 1.2 million people living with Parkinson's disease in the United States (Parkinson's Foundation). If you or a loved one was recently diagnosed with PD or you're caring for someone living with it, there are many things to learn and consider. Knowledge and skill building is the best way to move forward and live life to the best of our abilities. Let's take a look at Parkinson's disease and ways to support others and spread awareness.
Awareness leads to understanding, better support, and earlier detection. Start a conversation, learn the warning signs and symptoms, share reliable information, and participate in community events. Organizations across the country use this month to highlight real stories, provide educational resources, and connect people to tools that help them live well with Parkinson's.
Parkinson's disease can cause issues with body motions, including tremor (shakiness), rigidity (muscle stiffness), slowed body movements, unstable posture, and difficulty walking (Harvard Health).
Behind every person living with Parkinson's is often a dedicated care partner, such as spouses, children, friends, and family members, who provide daily support. Caregiving can mean attending appointments, helping manage medications, noticing changes in symptoms, or simply offering patience and encouragement. It's meaningful work, but it can also be emotionally and physically demanding. Compassionate, professionally trained caregivers can assist with tasks of daily living to maintain routine and offer peace of mind.
