Senior's Guide for Switching Over to Daylight Savings Time

The time change is an annual event that occurs twice a year in most regions of the world. For the USA and Canada, this happens on the second Sunday of March and November when we "spring forward" or "fall back" an hour. This means that our nights are either extended by an hour in spring/summer or shortened by one during fall/winter respectively. Although this adjustment can be good for outdoor activities such as gardening or sports, it can also prove difficult and disorienting, especially to seniors with physical impairments who may suffer from seasonal depression linked to the darkness of wintertime. In this senior guide, you will find some tips on switching over to Daylight Savings Time to make the transition easier for yourself.

Preparing for the Time Change

There are steps you can take to prepare for the time change.

Adjusting Your Sleep Schedule

Before the time change happens, it helps to get into a new sleep schedule that is an hour ahead or behind, depending on which way the clocks are changing. You will feel much better after the switch if your body has already adapted to the new pattern, so try going to bed incrementally earlier or later each day until you reach the desired measure of rest.

Setting Clocks and Watches

Setting all clocks and electronic devices in your home correctly before Daylight Savings Time begins is essential for staying in sync with everyone else during this period.

Checking Electronics

Pay attention to your electronics. While many will adjust themselves automatically, others may need manual adjustments. Know which type of device you have and how to adjust it to keep up with the time change. If you have a smart home that is connected to your phone or a network, it should switch automatically. On the other hand, if you have a microwave or stove that is not connected, you may need to swap them manually.

Managing the Effects of The Time Change

Depending on your age and physical condition, switching over to Daylight Savings Time may result in some minor discomfort. However, by following these tips, you should be able to manage its effects with a minimum of disruption.

Sleeping Patterns

Try to maintain the same schedule as much as possible to avoid sleep disruptions. If you change your sleep schedule abruptly during the switchover, it can be much more difficult to get enough rest.

Meal Times

Eat meals at regular times throughout the day, at least 2-3 hours apart from one another if possible. This will ensure you're getting enough nutrition while keeping up with the new routine. Shifting your mealtime to the new schedule can help signal to your body that it's time to make that transition.

Activity and Appointment Times

Stick to activities and tasks consistently each day at their usual times. You may want to set reminders for the first few days, especially if you're struggling to keep up with your routine while adjusting to the time change. Reschedule activities that take place around sunrise or sunset to ensure that they fit with the new time. Set reminders for upcoming appointments as well.

Coping With Disorientation

If you feel particularly disoriented after switching over, it's okay! Just take a few deep breaths and remind yourself what time it really is until everything clicks into place again. Having someone else to help orient you and remind you of the time can also help.
