Caregiver's Guide to Power Outages

A power outage that lasts an hour is an inconvenience for most households. For a senior loved one who relies on a CPAP machine, refrigerated medication, or air conditioning, a power outage can create serious challenges. In hot weather, that same outage can quickly become a genuine health risk.

Knowing what to watch for and how to respond in advance is an important part of power outage safety for seniors. The good news is that most of the preparation is straightforward and low-cost.

Medical Devices and Refrigerated Medications

Start by making a list of every medical device in your loved one's home that requires electricity. CPAPs and BiPAPs are the most common, but also consider oxygen concentrators, hospital-style beds, nebulizers, and stairlifts.

Contact the utility company in New Jersey, which is typically PSE&G, and ask about their medical baseline or life support program. Enrollment usually means your loved one's address is flagged so crews can prioritize restoration, and you may receive advance notice of planned outages.

For medications that must stay cold, including certain insulins and some biologics, keep a small insulated cooler and a few ice packs in the freezer. These supplies are often enough to maintain safe storage during outages lasting less than 24 hours.

The FDA's guidance on medication storage during emergencies is worth reading once, so you know exactly how long each type can safely stay above refrigerated temperature. Write that information down and tape it to the cooler so anyone helping your loved one knows what to do.

A battery backup or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can keep a CPAP running for several hours. These range from about $100 to $300 at hardware stores and online. For longer outages, many CPAP manufacturers also sell dedicated travel battery packs.

Cooling and Heat Safety

Seniors are more vulnerable to heat illness than younger adults because the body's ability to regulate temperature changes with age. When the air conditioning goes out during a New Jersey summer, indoor temperatures can rise quickly. This is especially true in Edison, Bridgewater, and Plainfield, where high humidity can make the heat feel even more intense.

Having a cooling plan is an important part of power outage safety for seniors. Have a plan for where your loved one can go if the house gets too warm. A nearby family member's home, a library, a senior center, or a shopping mall all work as cooling stations. Keep that list of options written down and easy to find. If your loved one lives alone, make sure a neighbor or friend knows to check in during an outage.

A battery-powered fan, a spray bottle filled with water, and a supply of cold water can help during shorter outages. Having light snacks on hand can also make the situation more comfortable before a move becomes necessary.

Reducing Stress and Staying Informed

Power outages are disorienting, particularly at night. For seniors living with dementia or anxiety, the sudden change in routine can be distressing. A battery-powered lantern is often less alarming than a flashlight beam. Familiar comfort items, such as a favorite blanket or a tablet with downloaded music, can also help make a difficult evening feel more manageable.

Keep a hand-crank weather radio on hand for updates. Charge all phones and power banks before a storm whenever possible, and keep a simple one-page outage plan where both of you can find it.
