3 Ways to Help Aging Parents Maintain Their Independence

Getting older is a part of life. Some people have difficulty coming to terms with the fact that they will have to slow down a little bit. However, slowing down doesn't necessarily mean that you have to lose your independence.

The term "aging in place" refers to elderly individuals who want to remain in their own homes while living independently. Nowadays, more and more seniors are choosing to stay in their homes as they grow older. Thankfully, there are ways that you can respect the wishes of your loved one while also giving yourself added peace of mind.

Get an Electric Wheelchair to Improve Mobility

If your loved one has a difficult time walking or standing for long periods of time, consider getting them an electric scooter or wheelchair. This will allow them to get around their home and even go outside, without having someone assist them.

There are many companies that sell electric wheelchairs and scooters for a discounted price and may offer financing options as well. If your loved one is on Medicaid or Medicare, they may be eligible to get their electric scooter while paying little to no out-of-pocket expenses.

Make Use of Automated Pill Dispensers

It is common for senior citizens to be put on a daily medication regimen. In some cases, it could be dangerous if the person suddenly stops taking the medicine. This is why many adults fear that their elderly parents who live independently will forget to take their medicine every day.

Luckily, there are several devices on the market today that will help your parents remember when to take their medicines. There are even devices that will automatically sort and dispense the proper amount of pills each day.

Install Safety Equipment in the Home

Another big concern for people with elderly parents living independently is the risk of falling or getting hurt while they are alone. While there is no way to guarantee that your parent will not fall when you are not around, there are a few things that you can do that will help to minimize the risks. Some of the safety precautions that you can take include:

  • Installing grab bars in the bathtub, near the toilet, and in other areas that may have slippery floors
  • Putting non-slip mats in the shower and bathtub
  • Installing ramps over the exterior steps that lead to the front and back doors of the home
  • Making sure that the lighting is good in every room of the house

If your parent has difficulty going up and down the stairs, you can consider getting a stair lift installed in their home.
