Summer School for Seniors and Caregivers and In Home Care

Summer days are hot and staying indoors with air conditioning seems ideal; especially for our elderly loved ones who may have trouble regulating body temperature.  Instead of using this time to relax the day away in front of the television, why not take the opportunity to take some summer classes.  It is common to believe that school is just for kids and young adults.  This could not be further from the truth.  There are many ways to keep our brains active and to keep participating in our community.  It is beneficial to look for classes in your community that are geared toward senior adults.

Senior classes in the community tend to be offered at a reduced price and are designed to improve skills, sharpen the mind, and enhance quality of life.  Computer technology and healthy living courses are very helpful for elderly adults who might need a boost in learning in those areas.  Learning how to use a smartphone, navigate websites and use social media are great for seniors who wish to stay connected to family members who may not live nearby.  Healthy living courses will teach ways to eat better to fuel the body and mind.  With the guidance of a physician, some low impact exercise classes can also be wonderful for a senior; both mentally and physically.

It is helpful to find an activity that is interesting and aim to find training in that field.  For instance, if your senior loved one likes to sew, perhaps there is a quilting group they can participate in.  If art is interesting, look into a class based on pottery or painting.  It is not too late to learn to play an instrument.  No matter what the class is, the important thing is to keep engaged in the community and to keep the mind active.  Learning the arts also happens to be very therapeutic.

Going back to school can be a fun for people of all ages.  Look for classes in your community for a senior loved one that will benefit their life in many ways.  Family caregivers might find taking a class together might be a fun way to bond outside of daily responsibilities.  Classes geared toward active seniors will also improve quality of life, enhance independence, and provide enrichment, wellness, resources and fun!
