Safety Tips for Seniors Who Live Alone with Live in Senior Care

As our elderly loved ones get older, the need for daily assistance becomes more apparent.  Whether a senior loved one needs a little extra help with household chores or is recovering from a recent illness or surgery, live in senior care is a very popular and an often sought after choice.   For many elderly, it is very important to be able to live comfortably in the familiarity of their own home rather than being uprooted and moved to an assisted living facility.  Maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle is the best route for a happy life.

If your senior loved one is still very active in their community, they will surely appreciate being able to stay home for as long as physically possible.  Live in senior care makes this option possible and also delivers peace of mind to family who might not have time in their daily schedule to make regular visits.   Not only is a major move to an assisted living facility or nursing home very costly, it can be very detrimental to a loved one’s overall outlook on life.  A life altering move to facility can be confusing and stressful, which may lead to depression.  Whenever possible, it is best to provide the extra daily care in the comforts of home.

Some safety tips for seniors who live alone include making sure the household is kept in a relatively tidy condition.  If your senior loved one is already having difficulty with balance or experiencing poor eyesight, there needs to be a clear path in the home at all times.  Remove all scatter rugs that are not properly tacked down.  Tie up any loose cords that may cross hallways or create a trip hazard.  Be sure your loved one wears nonskid shoes and refrains from wearing socks on wood floors without shoes.  Avoid over waxing or polishing floors and install handrails in bathrooms and around stairs to further assist with random unsteadiness.

One helpful change in a senior’s home is to change out all round doorknobs and faucet handles for levers.  Fingers can get stiff and this will make opening and shutting doors and turning off water in the home difficult.  This simple change will make life a lot easier for your senior loved one while also providing safety.

Install light-sensing and motion-activated nightlights in hallways and bathrooms throughout the home.  Your senior loved one will be able to navigate in the dark a lot easier with some assistance of a little bit of light.  This will prevent any accidental falls while searching for the light switch when needed after the sun has set.

Live in senior care includes light housekeeping, meal preparation and companionship.  If you would like to learn more about caring and consistent in home help and the many benefits of professional elderly care or dementia and Alzheimer’s care, call Senior Helpers to speak to a senior care specialist today 636-695-3140!   Live in senior care allows your loved one to stay in the comforts of their own home for as long as possible while receiving the level of care they need.
