Tips for Seniors to Stay Hydrated Aside from Drinking Water

The people of Lee's Summit, MO are certainly plenty familiar with the concept of intense summer heat. In fact, this area may once again face a brutal summer ahead. This leaves many wondering what they can do to stay hydrated even if they don't like to drink water. We have some ideas for how you can keep your body hydrated and not have to deal with drinking water at all. 

Consider Sparkling Water

Sparkling water has become all the rage lately as people enjoy the taste of it and as they often use it as a replacement for drinks such as sodas. They can still enjoy the bubbly taste that sparkling water provides, but they don't have to take in all of the sweeteners, calories, and artificial flavors of soda. Consume Fruits and Vegetables

Keeping yourself (or someone you care for) hydrated does not necessarily mean drinking a beverage. That's right, you can stay hydrated by eating certain foods as well. A great example is fruits and vegetables. Nearly all fruits and vegetables have at least some water in them. This means that you can start to rehydrate your body naturally by eating these foods. 

Great options for getting more hydration include: 

  • Watermelons
  • Strawberries
  • Kiwis
  • Oranges

Someone who is dieting and may want to keep their calorie count under control could switch out some of these fruits with vegetables. There are plenty of great options there for hydration including celery, broccoli, and more. You will keep your calorie count under control and still get the hydration you need. 

Coffee and Tea Can Help

Some people are under the false belief that coffee and/or tea make a person more dehydrated. This belief comes from the fact that both beverages contain caffeine. It is true that caffeine is a mild diuretic, but there is far more water contained within coffee to offset any dehydration factor that the caffeine may pose. Thus, one should feel confident that drinking some coffee or tea can help them remain hydrated when they are out in the Missouri heat. These may not be as effective as some other beverages, but coffee and tea do still help one stay hydrated. 

Soup Can Also Hydrate You

Finally, don't forget about soup. No matter if you serve it hot or cold, soup can help you get some extra hydration as well. It is best to go with a vegetable-based soup in order to get the most hydrating effects. 

Soup is easily accessible at the store and can even be purchased as individual servings if you wish. As long as you have access to a microwave somewhere nearby you should be all set. This is a tasty alternative to simply drinking water to get hydrated, and that alone should be enough reason for you to consider having some soup to stay hydrated.
