In-Home Assisted Living and Creative Cardio

“I just don’t have time to go to the gym today.”  This probably this sounds familiar to some.  Getting up and going to the gym can be a pain, but the good news is that you don’t have to go to the gym to squeeze in a little exercise!  Find fun workouts.  Working out doesn’t have to be a strain or an inconvenience. Take your favorite activities and turn them into a quick workout.  If you love shopping, hit the mall and walk around once or twice.  Do you like music?  Turn it up and dance away in your living room!  Any activity can be turned into exercise with the right attitude and a little creativity.  Even chores such as vacuuming and folding laundry can be considered some form of exercise when combined with climbing the stairs and lifting heavy baskets of clothing.

Some unexpected ways to get in cardio include hula hooping and roller blading.  The hula hoop is an inventive piece of equipment that’s not just for your kids.  It started as a way to have fun and interact with others.  Today, it’s become one of the most entertaining ways to get fit.  You can use the hula hoop to trim your waistline and lose weight all over your body.  Roller blading is another creative way to get in the cardiovascular exercise you need.  It not only provides a nice cardio workout; it strengthens your leg muscles as well.  The side-to-side motion also works out your entire body, including your abdominal muscles.

Exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym and hitting the treadmill.  Taking your dog for a walk can help revive your workout.  Walking a dog is great cardio.  You’ll improve your heart rate and lose inches off your legs.  Two other health benefits of dog walking are less stress and the loss of abdominal fat.  Walking is a great stress buster and works out your entire core.  Walking, along with playing basketball with your children, and even dancing in your living room are great and fun ways to build a healthy heart without feeling the pain of tedious workouts.  Just a few minutes of regular, daily exercise can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease.  Combine physical activity with other lifestyle measures, such as maintaining a healthy weight, and the payoff is even greater.

Find a buddy.  Getting your exercise requires motivation, and sometimes you need a little push.  As a friend to join in on the fun!  You can cheer each other on while working towards a healthier heart!  Play children’s games.  Go outside and play a game of kickball with your kids.  Kickball allows you to run, jump, and kick your cardio fitness into gear.  Some of the best cardio exercises require these types of moves.  You’ll get all the benefits of several exercises in one game of kickball.  Hopscotch is another child’s game that will give you a cardio boost without feeling like too much work.  Hopscotch is a low impact way to get cardio into your fitness.  It requires hopping to do the game.  Your legs get a good workout and so does your heart.

Work it out everywhere.  You don’t have to pay for a gym membership to work on your fitness.  Some exercises can even be done at your desk!  Take a look at your surroundings and figure out how you can turn everyday activities into heart-healthy exercises.  About to take a ride in the elevator?  Opt for the stairs instead!  Running to the coffee machine?  Try taking a longer route there.  Every little bit counts!
